Your list of top movies of ALL TIME!

The Chief shared this image from Edgar Wright over the weekend. It’s Edgar’s list of top 40 movies.

We’ve done top movie lists before, but I’m unsure if we’ve just done all movies ever as a list. Don’t need to share your top 40 (unless that’s your thing) but I’d be curious to see what people list. I expect no two people on the planet to have the same top ten list, meaning your movie list is as distinct as your fingerprint.

Yes it is. But it’s brilliantly bad. I don’t like people crying out 'that’s not how computers work!". That’s not how spacecraft work in Star Wars but no-one complains.

Hackers embraces what it’s trying to do fully, and it does a great job of defining that moment in time when computers were this weird thing no-one understood. The cringy hacker names, geeking out over the terrible laptop, Fisher Stevens on his skateboard, the soundtrack, attacking the Gibson, HACK THE PLANET! The whole movie is just terrific. Bad doesn’t matter.

It would be one of those changes-depending-on-mood lists, but it would always include

The Wizard of Oz
Blade Runner
Star Wars
The Princess Bride
The Ladykillers (proper version)

Not necessarily in that order (though probably in that order for #1 and #2).

The Goonies
Raiders of the Lost Ark
The Thing
Pulp Fiction
Die Hard
The Dark Crystal
Jackass the Movie
The Court Jester
The Empire Strikes Back
Batman Returns
Weird Science
The Breakfast Club
Friday the 13th (1-3)
The Man with the Golden Gun

In no order.

Godzilla (original)
Die Hard with a Vengeance
The Addams Family
Manchester By The Sea
Synechdoche, New York
The Great Dictator
Young Frankenstein

1 and 2 never change. 3 to 5 are probably interchangeable.

  1. The Lost Boys
  2. Donnie Darko
  3. Lethal Weapon
  4. Kill Bill
  5. Dumb and Dumber

Meet Joe Black struck me as more egregious initially - I’ve not seen either film but can accept Hackers’ subject matter appealing to a typical “geek” our age.

Looking into it they were both trashed by critics - Meet Joe Black 51% Fresh, Metascore of 43. Hackers 32% Fresh, Metascore of 46.

I’ll get my similarly disrespectful choices out of the way first:

Transformers (1986)
Young Guns 2

As for the rest, unranked:

Taxi Driver
The King of Comedy
Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind
The Talented Mr. Ripley
The Silence of the Lambs
The Fugitive
Sea of Love
Carlito’s Way
Die Hard
