It seems somehow wrong that only half of the top 10, and only two out of the top 5, are by American authors.

#2356

Not MY Lists! :rofl::sunglasses:

#2357

Not as wrong as The Da Vinci Code being on there, though

#2358

As has been pointed out elsewhere, it’s Most Loved, not Best. People love that book. And Outlander.

#2359

Not as wrong as Twilight.
EDIT: Or even worse, 50 Shades.

#2360

I’ve actually read and enjoyed some of the books on that list. That tends to be rare with a reading list for me.

    1. Harry Potter (Series) - Only the first book
    1. Lord of the Rings
    1. Charlotte’s Web
    1. Chronicles of Narnia - A handful of these
    1. Grapes of Wrath - Read most of it for a class in high school
    1. Alice in Wonderland
    1. The Da Vinci Code
    1. Dune
    1. Call of the Wild
    1. The Hitchhiker’s Guide to The Galaxy

    1. Jurassic Park
    1. Invisible Man
    1. Ready Player One
    1. The Pilgrim’s Progress
    1. The Sirens of Titan

I started a handful of the others but didn’t finish.

#2364

Is this your top 100 list or the books you’ve read on the other list? there seems to be an odd interpolation here.

#2365

???

Seems to me that US focused more on popular titles, not as PaulF put, the best.

#2366

Books from the list I have read:

  1. To Kill a Mockingbird
  2. Harry Potter (Series)
  3. Lord of the Rings
  4. Charlotte’s Web
  5. Chronicles of Narnia
  6. Great Gatsby
  7. The Adventures of Tom Sawyer
  8. Alice in Wonderland
  9. Great Expectations
  10. Catcher in the Rye
  11. Dune
  12. Frankenstein- I despise this- Dracula is the better horror novel!
  13. The Giver
  14. Game of Thrones (series) (First book only)
  15. Crime and Punishment

“Classics” I have read not on the list:
The Aeneid
The Brothers Karamazov (Better then Crime and Punishment, IMHO, just less accessible, though if you’ve read C&P, you should be able to read this).
Arabian Nights
The Short Stories of Kafka
The Short Stories of Poe
Dracula
The Works of HP Lovecraft
The Time Machine
War of the Worlds
Most of Shakespeare’s Plays
Gilgamesh
The Mabinogion (SP?)
The Simirillion
Most of Journey to the West
The Art of War
Of Mice and Men
Animal Farm
The Scarlet Letter (Good G-d, too flowery)
Slaughterhouse Five
Some of Sherlock Holmes
Huckleberry Finn

Popular Books that are not Classics:
A Series of Unfortunate Events

#2367

Be warned: the last entry is…disappointing.

#2368

You like Russian literature too? Try The Gulag Archipelago - a bit rough going, but a heck of a tale very well told. I don’t think it’s fiction, just written as well as good fiction. (It’s been a long time!)

#2369

I’m taking it as my Writing Intensive course. Am writing an essay comparing two of Pushkin’s works for said class. I already had my first draft read by the professor- he likes it, but thinks I didn’t use enough evidence to support a few arguments ( one tied to the thesis), and that I need to read more about Pushkin as a person.

#2370

I read it when it was originally published. I just haven’t read the whole series.

#2371

Yeah. That’s when I read The Bible.
