The 90s were actually a strange time for music between the US and UK. In the 80s the charts were largely the same acts and I think today they are too. Around 1989 there were was as big schism, from Madchester to nascent European house to Britpop very little crossed over either way. If it did it was limited, grunge came to the UK but it was really just Nirvana, Soundgarden and Pearl Jam. A movement of 3 bands.
Bush sold nothing in the UK, Matchbox 20 and many more. They were nonentities.
At the end of the decade the magazines voted on best song of the decade in the UK and this was the most frequent winner. I doubt many in the US have heard of the band or the song (but don't let that prejudice you, it is amazing and the video filmed there).
