Spider-Man: Far From Home - SPOILER discussion

This is already out in places like Japan and China, and releases widely this week on 2 July. So I thought it was worth having somewhere to talk about it!

Having been a bit down on the recent MCU movies I’m still really looking forward to this one. A lifelong love of Spidey makes it hard to turn down, so I’m planning to catch it early this week if I can.

After being spoiled on the appearance of J Jonah Jameson in a review the other day, I’ve now been spoiled on who the actor is.

I think they’re a great choice.

I’m just sitting down to watch this now. Going to go out for food about 20 mins in because the queue was well out the doors (I’ll be going again with my nephew so I don’t mind missing some but who knows, I’m in loving it I might forget about how hungry I am). 4 screens sold out.

That was pretty much exactly how I thought it was going to be.

Except for the mid and end credits. I didn’t see either of those coming.

I feel like I did coming out if the first one and now that is one of my favourite MCU movies so I need to wait until I see it again, there’s a lot I want to re-watch.

They nailed the Mysterio/Spidey fights. Felt so much like the comics to me in the way they did it.

Kept spoiler blur there as I think I’m first to see it maybe so I’ll give it a wee bumper in case anyone takes a look in here.

The movie’s out in a lot of the world now so MAJOR SPOILERS from here down.

I thought it was enjoyable enough. I found it hard to be invested in the “Elemental” stuff in the first half, knowing it was all going to be revealed to be fake. I liked the second half more, when Gyllenhaal is going all in on the villainy.

I also just rewatched Civil War yesterday, and was wondering why they never again brought up the BARF technology, so I loved that reveal.

The post-credits scenes were fun, and I loved the JJJ reveal. Am I misunderstanding, or are we to take it that Hill has always been a Skrull? Either way, it makes Fury’s incompetence in the movie make sense.

My problem with the post-credits cliffhanger is the one I have with most of these status quo-changing endings: I want to know what happens right after, but by the time we pick up, it’ll likely be a good deal later. I’d rather this had happened mid-movie (even if it’s in the next movie) and we actually saw him deal with the consequences.

It’s okay, none of this happens until 2023

Was it Cobie Smoulders in the Skrull make-up? I think so. If so I’m assuming she has always been a Skrull which is pretty cool and something I didn’t think about last night.

Yeah, it definitely still sounded like her voice.

I agree about BARF. The throwbacks to earlier films were really great and done really well. The first ten minutes were pretty fantastic at bringing us right into the story and recapping, the girl who plays Gwen was brilliant in this and during the rest of the movie too.

I really kind of wish Gyllanhaal was playing a bigger character in the MCU. He was fantastic and based on his promotion for the film he seems like he genuinely got an amazing experience and he loved it. He’s lightened up a lot. He was hilarious in some of the interviews and him and Tom Holland had great chemistry.

Do you mean Betty?

I do :man_facepalming:

Apparently it was Soren, Ben Mendelsohn’s wife from the end of Captain Marvel, played by the same actress as that movie.

Ahh. I guess Hill is also in space then.

Fury said something like “Don’t you dare invoke her name” when Peter mentioned Captain Marvel, which did make me wonder.

Were we meant to recognise what Fury was up to on the Skrull ship?

That mid-credit scene!!

I’m assuming that it is something that will be explored but nothing struck me as familiar.

Nah, I assume it’s setup for a Captain Marvel sequel. I doubt they even know where they’re going with it yet.

Overall, I really liked that. Some minor quibbles (still think it’s unnecessary making Michelle MJ) but it was well plotted, funny, had awesome effects and the cast were great. The actress playing Betty did well out of this kind she was in about one scene last time.

Surprised at the lack of Stan Lee cameo though; I thought they had banked one for this film before he died.

Didn’t anybody feel there seemed to be a lot of minor scenes left out or scenes edited really tightly in general?

Not that it affected the movie, it just feels like they filmed more and didn’t bother putting it in.

There was certainly a lot to fit in here. Not least of which was the information that Peter Parker allegedly watches porn (although he is polite enough to pay for it).

I enjoyed the movie but it did seem to struggle to carry the weight of the MCU baggage it inherited. Sort of like Iron Man 2, only instead of trying to set up the universe it was trying like mad to keep up with it.
