Rank the MCU movies - Post Infinity War Edition

Thor 2 at the bottom?!

Like John Carter, I’m watching it in bits and still maybe twenty mins from the end. John Carter I inched another 10 mins to the 1 hr mark last week on a long flight. Chose to stare out of the window for four hours rather than continue.

Make no apologies for Thor 2. If you’re defending it you’re simply wrong

01/ Avengers
02/ Winter Soldier
03/ Guardians of the Galaxy
04/ Civil War
05/ Age of Ultron
06/ Iron Man
07/ Iron Man 3
08/ Dr Strange
09/ Thor
10/ Ant-Man
11/ Captain America: First Avenger
12/ Thor 2
13/ Incredible Hulk
14/ Iron Man 2

I’d say the first three stand out and then 4 - 10 are much closer. The bottom 4 are definitely the lesser efforts.

From the Dr Strange thread, these are my rankings for the MCU movies:

01/ Guardians of the Galaxy
02/ Iron Man
03/ Avengers
04/ Captain America: Winter Soldier
05/ Captain America: Civil War
06/ Iron Man 3
07/ Captain America: First Avenger
08/ Doctor Strange
09/ Thor
10/ Avengers: Age of Ultron
11/ Ant-Man
12/ Iron Man 2
13/ Thor 2
14/ Incredible Hulk

If I can take a stab at adding in as many of the others that I have seen…

01/ Spider-Man 2
02/ Guardians of the Galaxy
03/ Iron Man
04/ Avengers
05/ Captain America: Winter Soldier
06/ Captain America: Civil War
07/ X-Men 2
08/ Deadpool
09/ Spider-Man
10/ Iron Man 3
11/ X-Men: Days of Future Past
12/ Captain America: First Avenger
13/ Doctor Strange
14/ Blade 2
15/ X-Men
16/ X-Men: First Class
17/ Thor
18/ Blade
19/ Avengers: Age of Ultron
20/ Ant-Man
21/ The Wolverine
22/ Iron Man 2
23/ Thor 2
24/ Incredible Hulk
25/ Hulk
26/ Spider-Man 3 (“How’s the pie?”)
27/ X-Men 3
28/ Amazing Spider-Man
29/ Amazing Spider-Man 2
30/ Fantastic Four
31/ Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer
32/ X-Men Origins: Wolverine
33/ Blade: Trinity
34/ Tranktastic Four
35/ Daredevil (“That’s the C-Train!!”)
36/ Elektra

Not yet seen X-Men Apocalypse or the Ghost Rider or Punisher films.

MCU movies (the top five are all probably roughly the same for me, and the order just depends on my mood):

  1. Captain America: The Winter Soldier
  2. Avengers
  3. Captain America: Civil War
  4. Iron Man
  5. Iron Man 3
  6. Thor
  7. Avengers: Age of Ultron
  8. Ant-Man
  9. Guardians of the Galaxy
  10. Iron Man 2
  11. Doctor Strange
  12. Captain America: The First Avenger
  13. Thor 2
  14. Incredible Hulk

I’d have to say:

  1. Captain America: The Winter Soldier
  2. Avengers
  3. Iron Man
  4. Captain America: The First Avenger
  5. Civil War
  6. Guardians of the Galaxy

And then all the others just kind of blend together into a blob of sameness.

oh, no it’s not the greatest, but there are worst, in my humble “wrong” opinion, Chief

I’ll give his a try, I guess it would probably change depending on when I do it, but the rough order would stay the same.

Marvel Movies first

01/ Winter Soldier
02/ Iron Man 3
03/ Dr Strange
04/ Guardians of the Galaxy
05/ Incredible Hulk
06/ Civil War
07/ Thor
08/ Ant-Man
09/ Iron Man
10/ Thor 2
11/ Avengers
12/ Iron Man 2
13/ Age of Ultron
14/ Captain America

Positions are determined by how I felt at the time of release, how I feel now and if I were to pick one to watch on a night in the order of select them in.

I’m amazed Incredible Hulk doesn’t get more love. The third act has some crappy CGI which blunted the fight a a lot as it looked like a game, but it’s head and shoulders above Cap 1 and 3, Iron Man 2, Thor 2, Ultron, etc in my humble opinion!

finally something we agree on…

I rewatched Incredible Hulk fairly recently, and while I don’t think any of the MCU movies are bad, I just felt that the story was a bit slow and by-the-numbers.

I thought Norton was OK in it, but I do wonder whether audiences like Ruffalo’s Banner/Hulk so much that Incredible Hulk feels a bit weaker in retrospect.

I can’t rank them top to bottom, but I think they exist in tiers.

First tier: Winter Soldier, GotG, Avengers, Iron Man

Second tier: Ant-Man, Thor, Civil War, Iron Man 3,

Third tier: Captain America, Iron Man 2, Age of Ultron, Incredible Hulk

Fourth tier: Thor 2.

I was staying with a friend this weekend, a longtime comics reader and high school English teacher, who insisted that the first Iron Man is the ONLY good Marvel movie. Weirdly, this is the second person who has said it to me in the last month.

I obviously don’t agree but I sort of see where they’re coming from and respect that opinion.

I have no plans to see Strange in theaters unless something comes up. For me the top five:

  1. Guardians
  2. Avengers
  3. Iron Man
  4. Iron Man 3
  5. Ultron

The 5 worst:

  1. Civil War
  2. Winter Soldier
  3. Ant Man
  4. Thor 2
  5. Iron Man 2

I would say for me outside of my top three and bottom three they’re all kind of similar in quality, though. Which I mean as more compliment than insult.

I’m glad I’m not the only one who quotes that scene.

Just the MCU stuff (I can’t be arsed working out all the Fox and Sony ones in).

  1. Iron Man
  2. The Avengers
  3. Captain America: Winter Soldier
  4. Ant-Man
  5. Guardians of the Galaxy
  6. Captain America: Civil War*
  7. Thor
  8. Iron Man 3
  9. Captain America
  10. Avengers: Age of Ultron
  11. Iron Man 2
  12. Thor: The Dark World
  13. Dr Strange*
  14. The Incredible Hulk

*pending a second viewing.

I had a chat with some friends a few days ago and we worked out our top 3 and bottom 3. Mine was:

  1. Avengers
  2. Thor
  3. Civil War

3. Iron Man 2
2. Thor 2

  1. Ant Man

I’ll have to spend some time figuring out the rest later.

Not going to list them all, but CA: Winter Soldier the best, followed by Avengers and CA: Civil War.

Captain America best 3 movies so far, could only be challenged by Avengers if Infinity War is awesome (and I hope it is).

That’s pretty much my list too. Haven’t seen Strange yet though. Maybe this week.

I think Spidey 2 and X Men 2 are the best non Disney movies. I’d still put them both below Avengers. Then First Class I’d put below Winter Soldier. all the rest would be in the bottom third and people always skip that section on these lists so just scatter them below Any Man.

  1. Ant-Man
  2. Iron Man
  3. The First Avenger

The rest are all tied for 4th, since they’re not really that discernible.

  1. X-Men 2
  2. Spider-Man 2
  3. X-Men Apocalypse
  4. HULK
  5. Spider-Man
  6. X-Men
