Rank the MCU Movies - Post Endgame Edition

Ok folks, we have 22 movies and we’re about to move into the next phase. Lets keep this thread Endgame spoiler free. I’m curious to see where everyone’s rankings are now that the arc of Thanos, which started started 7 years and 13 movies ago, is finally at an end.

Not seen

Captain Marvel

I’m now planning on watching them all again with my kids
The only ones I’ve watched again fully and enjoyed are Guardians of the Galaxy and Ragnarok. I expect them to be top of the list when it comes to ranking them all again after a rewatch. I rewatched Infinity War and it still had the same problems it had watching it first time round, basically some really boring scenes in between the excellent ones.

Black Panther will probably slide due to the poor fight at the end. Endgame may lose its epicness on a second watch.

With the exception of the bottom 4 these were all fun to watch, some extremely fun.

  1. Winter Soldier - Most satisfying story
  2. Black Panther - Better in most ways than WS but rushes the ending
  3. Endgame - Incredible payoff to the arcs of key characters
  4. Iron Man 3 - One of the rare MCU movies to feel 100% the vision of its director
  5. Ragnarok - The most fun I’ve had in the theater at one of these
  6. GOTG 2 - Yondu! Ego! Baby Groot! Yondu again because until Endgame he had my favorite MCU arc
  7. GOTG - Another great time at the theater
  8. Infinity War - Thanos’s movie, and Thanos rules
  9. Homecoming - Insanely likeable Spidey + one of the MCU’s most complex villains
  10. Civil War - I liked this a lot, didn’t get too dark for me. Black Panther steals the show and I love how he handles Zemo
  11. Avengers - The NY battle hasn’t been topped in these movies unfortunately
  12. Iron Man - Solid & laid an even more solid foundation
  13. Age of Ultron - I don’t remember this too well but I remember mostly liking it, in large part due to Vision. Top 5 MCU scene is when he defends humanity’s value before destroying Ultron
  14. Iron Man 2 - I started to get tired of Tony in Civil War but this was well before that, when he was fresh enough to smooth over nearly any flaw
  15. Incredible Hulk - I like the first half a lot
  16. First Avenger - I like the first half a lot
  17. Captain Marvel - Predictable, carried by Larson & SLJ & the Skrulls
  18. Ant-Man & The Wasp - Watched it late one night while my baby was napping on me. Maybe that’s the way you’ve got to see this movie because I enjoyed it
  19. Dr. Strange - Boring. Bland take on magic. Strange would have worked so much better as a mystery. His scene in Ragnarok was a fine introduction. Credit where credit’s due: it has a great final battle (mostly because it isn’t really a batttle) and most of these movies don’t
  20. Ant-Man - One huge missed opportunity, aside from a perfectly cast Michael Pena
  21. Thor - Dull, ugly movie
  22. Thor 2 - Even duller ugly movie
  1. The Avengers.

  2. Spider-Man Homecoming

  3. Endgame

  4. Guardians of the Galaxy

  5. Winter Soldier

  6. Infinity War

7.Thor Ragranok

  1. Thor

  2. Captain America The First Avenger

  3. Civil War

  4. Guardians of the Galaxy 2

  5. Iron Man 3

  6. Black Panther

  7. Iron Man

  8. Doctor Strange

  9. Age of Ultron

  10. Captain Marvel

  11. Iron Man 2

  12. Ant-Man

  13. Thor 2

21.Ant Man 2

  1. Incredible Hulk

I copy and pasted the words to save time and while I’m happy with the chart itself (It’s one of my favourites), the inconsistencies still bug me. Like Endgame.

I’m looking forward to see a combined ranking. Endgame is looking very mid-tabley

Not surprising, but it’s quite a range of answers here. These would be my tiers.

The great ones, belong in all-time discussions:

  1. Guardians of the Galaxy

The good ones, have seen more than once, would see again:

  1. Guardians of the Galaxy 2
  2. Avengers: Infinity War
  3. Dr. Strange
  4. Captain America: The First Avenger
  5. Black Panther
  6. Avengers: Age of Ultron

Pretty good, no strong desire to see again:

  1. Avengers
  2. Iron Man 3
  3. Iron Man
  4. Thor: Ragnarok
  5. Spider-Man: Homecoming
  6. Avengers: Endgame

Starting to get a little meh here:

  1. Thor
  2. Iron Man 2
  3. Winter Soldier
  4. Thor 2

The stinkers:

  1. Ant-Man
  2. Captain Marvel
  3. Incredible Hulk
  4. Ant-Man and the Wasp
  5. Civil War

Yeah curious where it’ll end up. We have a few top tens so far but I think it’s going to be a bit divisive.

Civil War looks the most divisive, which isn’t that surprising.

Just eyeballing the lists it looks like we all agree there is a top tier of 12-14 that are good, and 8-10 that are OK to bad, and we don’t at all agree on which is which.

I have a feeling Endgame might come down for me over time. I put It above GotG which is a better movie but just isn’t as fresh. The buzz I still have for it has sort of boosted it somewhat.

blaaargh… I’ll just do this later, not in the zone right now… although I still haven’t see Cpt. Marvel… xD

01/ Avengers: Endgame – “oh, no, such and such didn’t make sense, wah, wah”. Fuck you, your face doesn’t make sense.

02/ Guardians of the Galaxy

03/ Thor: Ragnarok

04/ The Avengers

05/ Spider-Man: Homecoming – this is still the best script in the MCU so far.

06/ Iron Man

07/ Captain America: The Winter Soldier

Okay, so the above are the ones I would be quite happy to sit down and watch any time. Maybe I need more perspective on Endgame but all I know right now is that it pounded the hell out of my heartstrings in a way no other MCU movie has done.

08/ Avengers: Infinity War – still a remarkable achievement, of course, but since all the pay-offs are in Endgame I can’t imagine me returning to it unless I try to pull off a six-hour double-bill somehow.

09/ Black Panther

10/ Captain America: Civil War

11/ Iron Man 3

12/ Ant-Man

13/ Ant-Man and the Wasp – I can’t really distinguish between the Ant-Man movies at all.

14/ Captain America: The First Avenger

15/ Guardians of the Galaxy vol. 2

The above section are all still very entertaining movies, just not as eminently rewatchable as the first section. Then I see a noticeable drop-off in quality to the following…

16/ Doctor Strange

17/ Avengers: Age of Ultron - the one more-or-less self-contained Avengers movie we got and the best scene was their party. Maybe they should have done it as a Hangover-style comedy.

18/ Iron Man 2

19/ Thor

Those four are fine, they all have their merits, but are all a little bit clunky. And then we take another noticeable step down in quality…

20/ Captain Marvel – because clearly I hate women.

21/ Thor: The Dark World

22/ Incredible Hulk – the movie that was given up for adoption.

I really don’t get the strong dislike for Ant Man and Wasp. I find it highly entertaining, very light and knowing and low stakes. A charming cast and some very funny gags.

Thor 2 was terrible and boring. Iron Man 2 wasn’t so boring but was a mess. Ultron has good moments but doesn’t work. Any Man and Wasp is nowhere near those films in badness.

Tier 1
Iron Man
Black Panther
Infinity War
Winter Soldier

Tier 2
Everything else

Tier 3
Ant Man
Age of Ultron

Tier 4
Thor 2

I just found it very flat, with nowhere near the charm or invention of the first movie.

The best was Winter Soldier with GotG2 being the worse.
I was one of the worst sequels I’ve ever seen.
I hate it so much that I retroactively hate GotG because it was so bad.
I’m furious with James Gunn for making a Kurt Russel film I hate.

I was glad Starlord was barely in Endgame.

That’s exactly why it’s so high in mine.

  1. Avengers (Will any comic movie set piece ever top he battle of New York?)
  2. Winter Soldier
  3. Guardians of the Galaxy (
  4. Infinity War (Best blockbuster ending since Empire.)
  5. GotG Vol. 2
  6. Endgame
  7. Ragnarok

  1. Iron Man
  2. Doctor Strange
  3. Homecoming (Holland is the best Spider-Man. The scene where he’s under the rubble crying right before he gets out is comic movie gold.)
  4. Civil War (This movie gets a lot of heat here for pacing and tonal issues, and I totally get why. But for my money it has some of the best action in he entire MCU, the airport fight is a ton of fun, and I kind of dug the bleakness of it. I thought it was a nice switch from bright primary colors, though this was probably the wrong movie to go that dark.)
  5. First Avenger (So charming)
  6. Iron Man 3

  1. Black Panther ( would have been higher, but the weightless CGI Black Panther does nothing for me. I expected better action from the guy who directed Creed.)
  2. Thor
  3. Age of Ultron

  1. Iron Man 2
  2. Ant-Man
  3. Thor: The Dark World (though I did like the last battle scene, and Loki doing a 10 second Cap impression)
  4. Ant-Man and the Wasp
  5. Captain Marvel (Women deserve better.)
