I don’t know, justifying being difficult as an actor with a bad script doesn’t sit right. As an actor, you have a job to do. If you’re being difficult, you’re doing that job badly, no matter the reason.
He does have a history of this. Took away final cut from Tony Kaye on American History X because he had more leverage with the studio at the time.
I’m sure he’s telling the truth, his motivation was to make a better film by his standards, and that’s a great motivation.
But yeah, don’t piss your co-workers off with how you go about that.
