I agree with all your points, but his one especially is one that bugged me. I hadn’t even been reading comics that long when Bendis’ New Avengers started and even I knew that throwing those characters into the team wasn’t quite right.
The justification was that it was bringing the Avengers back to being the team of Marvel’s biggest characters together in one place (which still didn’t really justify Luke Cage, Spider-Woman and Sentry at the time), but that’s never what the Avengers was at all, that’s the Justice League.
The Avengers launched, when Fantastic Four and Spider-Man were the biggest Marvel characters, as a teaming of all the non-Ditko characters who were already carrying a book, before that was quickly dumped in favour of Cap plus characters Stan liked but who couldn’t carry their own book.
With teams like the Avengers, the Defenders and even the JLA, there’s an ineffable quality to them that means some characters just don’t fit into them. Bendis sort of tore that down so he could use his favourite characters and it spread from there until we ended up with half-a-dozen team books carrying the Avengers name, most of which don’t really feel like the actual Avengers.
