Champions #1 - 5: I picked these up for cheap on Comixology earlier this week. I was curious, as I like Waid and Ramos (Impulse - yay!), and O5 Cyclops is one of my all time favourite characters.
It’s an interesting book, but I don’t think I’m the right audience for it anymore. Big surprise, eh? I’m 42 and this is very much a teen superhero book!
The book eschews comic book super villains for tackling real world problems, and does a good job to capture a lot of today’s zeitgeist - youth standing up for themselves, racism, pacifism, the rise of President Trump, and a drive for greater diversity.
It’s all very relevant.
But, in being so, it isn’t very entertaining. It feels a bit preachy, and probably a little condescending. The youth who rose up and mobilised to support Corbyn in the recent UK election would probably enjoy the heck out of it. But, it’s not for cynical old me.
On the positive side, the comic is very well made. The art’s awesome, colours bright, and there are some great character moments throughout.
