Aaron is their star player but in previous days Marvel had a bench of a great writers who have gone on to become comic Hall of Famers. Ennis, Ellis, David, Brubaker, Morrison, Millar, Bendis, Strazyknski, Milligan, Carey, Whedon, Kirkman, Vaughn, Waid, Fracton, Abnett, Lanning - and that’s off the top of my head at 2am.
And there’s a loss of unique artists who sell a book on their work alone. We don’t have a new generation drawing these characters in ways we’ve never seen. Jim Lee and Frank Quitely and JRJR and Brian Hitch are older, looking to be creative in new fields now.
Now, I believe this is a deliberate strategy by Marvel. They want the characters to be the stars, not the creatives. Creatives cost too much when they build up a name. But in that cost savings I believe they’ve lost a pound to save a penny. And now it’ll take years to build up a new generation of talent. If they even can.
