Late in his published career, the 40s Torch joined a team called the All Winner's Squad, which included Captain America and Bucky.
Decades later, the continuity-obsessed Roy Thomas realised this didn't fit with the new Marvel history, because Steve Rogers was in ice at that time. However, he also realised that the All Winners Squad comic never once mentioned Steve Rogers by name! (which let him ret-con it as being a different Cap). That's how important alter-egos were in the 40s. Nobody cared who was under the mask. By the 60s, everybody cared. Steve Rogers started mattering, because that's how Stan Lee wrote comics.
