Marvel Cinematic Universe Ranked by You and Slashfilm

I actually agree with almost all of these, except I’d bump up Thor and Incredible Hulk (both very underrated) and bump down Cap 1 and Civil War.

My own list would be:

15/ Thor 2 (as bad as IM2 was it’s not Thor 2 bad)
14/ Avengers 2
13/ Iron Man 2
12/ Cap 1 (Evans is terrible and the movie is really cheesy and all over the place)
11/ Civil War (I’m just not that into seeing Cap chasing Bucky for hours)
10/ Dr Strange (now they’re all getting good)
9/ Ant-Man (not perfect, but very fun)
8/ The Incredible Hulk (really got a soft spot for this film)
7/ Iron Man 3 (so funny and I LOVE The Mandarin twist!!)
6/ Cap 2 (very well made, but a little too dull to watch again & Evans is a vacuum)
5/ Iron Man 1 (the ground-breaker!)
4/ Thor 1 (so underrated and Hemsworth is amazing in it)
3/ Guardians 2 (near-perfect)
2/ Avengers 1 (also near-perfect)
1/ Guardians 1 (perfection)

  1. Cap 1
  2. Guardians 2
  3. Iron Man 1
  4. Ant-Man
  5. Guardians 1
  6. Winter Soldier.
  7. Iron Man 3
  8. Iron Man 2
  9. Cap 3
  10. Thor
  11. The Avengers
  12. Age of Ultron
  13. Thor 2
  14. The Incredible Hulk
  15. Doctor Strange

Note, everything after Guardians 1 is really hard to really rank, except for Doctor Strange…which is just dead last.

  1. Guardians
  2. Guardians 2
  3. Avengers
  4. Dr. Strange
  5. Iron Man
  6. Age of Ultron
  7. Iron Man 3
  8. Captain America
  9. Thor
  10. Incredible Hulk
  11. Iron Man 2
  12. Thor 2
  13. Ant-Man
  14. Winter Soldier
  15. Civil War

That is mine anyway. The top two tiers are all pretty good stuff. I guess Marvel is basically a Guardians vehicle for me though.

I agree that the first Thor tends to be underrated.

This is my rough list, although the top four probably change depending on my mood.

  1. Captain America: The Winter Soldier
  2. Avengers
  3. Iron Man
  4. Iron Man 3
  5. Captain America: Civil War
  6. Guardians of the Galaxy 2
  7. Thor
  8. Avengers: Age of Ultron
  9. Ant-Man
  10. Guardians of the Galaxy
  11. Doctor Strange
  12. Captain America: The First Avenger
  13. Thor 2
  14. Iron Man 2
  15. Incredible Hulk

1 Guardians 1
2.Guardians 2
3 Avengers 1
4 Winter Soldier ( Falcon, Redford, fight choreography)
5 Thor 1
6 Civil War ( intro of Spidey, Black Panther, Airport fight all great parts)
7 Ant-Man (great cast, liked the caper film concept)
8 Iron Man
9 Dr Strange
10 Avengers 2
11 Cap 1
12 IM 3
13 IM 2
14 Thor 2
15 Hulk

Probably something like:

  1. Avengers
  2. Guardians of the Galaxy 2
  3. Captain America: The First Avenger
  4. Thor
  5. Guardians of the Galaxy
  6. Captain America: The Winter Soldier
  7. Iron Man
  8. Doctor Strange
  9. Captain America: Civil War
  10. Avengers: Age of Ultron
  11. Ant-Man
  12. Iron Man 3
  13. Iron Man 2
  14. Incredible Hulk
  15. Thor 2

But the bottom third of the list are pretty much interchangeable – I don’t think about them enough to have an honest opinion

15/ The Incredible Hulk (too much of the old style superhero movies left in it)
14/ Dr Strange (passable)
13/ Ant-Man (passable)
12/ Iron Man 1 (over rated cause it was the first)
11/ Thor 2 (underated despite Loki/Thor actors, characters and dynamic)
10/ Iron Man 2 (A good time with Tony)
9/ Avengers 2 (we will never get by the disappointment of it not being perfect)
8/ Cap 2 (really solid all round)
7/ Civil War (great film start to finish)
6/ Iron Man 3 (an even better time with Tony)
5/ Thor 1 (wayyy better than it’s given credit)
4/ Cap 1 (in hindsight and context its an absolute gem)
3/ Guardians 2 (only beaten because Vol 1 got there first)
2/ Guardians 1 (probably one of the greatest films ever made)
1/ Avengers 1 (See above only also such a perfect moment in cinema history as it was the first of its kind and it was as close to perfect as an ensemble superhero movie can get. To get it so right first go… Its a damn fine film that holds its own against all other movies.)

I kinda get the feeling Spider-Man: Homecoming is going to the top of many lists.

Top: Avengers, GotG, Civil War

Bottom: Avengers Ultron. I think they did not do much of anything right, the only scene I liked was Hawkeye bitching and planning Pietro’s death.

  1. To everyone’s shock and surprise it’s Guardians for me.
  2. And this is where Guardians 2 goes. Honestly I think it’s a better film than the first, but the energy and excitement of the first one keep it in the number 1 spot. I’ll probably flip over time.
  3. Avengers. The problem is that the first 2/3rds are so boring, while the last third is so thrilling. I haven’t watched it in a while so I don’t know how it compares now that big superhero fights have become commonplace but at the time it felt like the pinnacle of what superhero movies could be.
  4. Iron Man 3. Really great balance of comedy & action, plus it’s engaging throughout.
  5. Winter Soldier. I’m not quite as sold on the espionage angle as some, but it’s an enjoyable movie with lots of cool moments.
  6. Thor. Not that much happens in it when I think back, but the world building is up there with Guardians. I think they needed a bit more from the supporting cast and this could have been Guardians level. I have high hopes for Thor 3, which looks like a Guardians spin off.
  7. Iron Man. Really a great first movie. The building the suit sequence is a highlight.
  8. Cap 1. Everything up till Cap starts figghting Hydra is great. After that I feel it loses it’s bearings s little. It’s a great origin story though.
  9. Incredible Hulk. Everything but Ed Norton is great in this.
  10. Ant Man. We’re getting into the movies with bigger flaws now, so it’s a matter of ranking the flaws. This is just ok for me.
  11. Dr Strange. Whereas this had some highs but some real lows too. I’ve never felt the need to watch it a second time.
  12. Iron Man 2. I don’t find it as bad as some folks, but it’s certainly a big step backwards and was a sign of trouble with Marvel.
  13. Age of Ultron. I just didn’t like this very much. It’s a shadow of the Avengers with a all over the place story and a distinct lack of humor. And I don’t think the Vision really worked either. The bit with Thors hammer was a cheap boost that he hadn’t earned.
  14. Civil War. Really didn’t like this at all.
  15. Thor 2. Such a shame, but this was awful. Bad villain, bad story, bad effects. It felt like one of those comics that was forced to be part of a big event and it didn’t really fit at all. Again, I’m glad Thor 3 seems like a complete 180.

I’d go:

  1. Winter Soldier
  2. Avengers
  3. Iron Man
  4. Thor
  5. Ant-Man
  6. Civil War
  7. Guardians
  8. Guardians 2
  9. Iron Man 3
  10. Age of Ultron
  11. Captain America
  12. Dr Strange
  13. Iron Man 2
  14. Thor 2
  15. Incredible Hulk

But it’s pretty close most of the way through. I’d say only the bottom three are anything but “pretty good” and only mediocre at worst.

The top tier, in more or less this order:
Winter Soldier
Civil War
Age Of Ultron

The “meh” level:
Iron Man
Iron Man 3
Guardians of the Galaxy
Thor 2
Doctor Strange
Incredible Hulk
Captain America

Didn’t really like:
Ant Man
Iron Man 2

Haven’t seen Guardians 2 yet - suspect it’ll go in that middle tier with #1.

And, I agree with Miqque, Homecoming and Ragnarok both look destined for top tier status so far.

Probably something like…

01/ Guardians 2 (maybe just riding a high right now but SO MUCH FUN)
02/ Guardians 1 (did anybody see the movie about SO MUCH FUN?)
03/ Winter Soldier (a different type of fun, if you like that sort of thing)
04/ Avengers 1 (lean, mean, team-up machine)
05/ Iron Man 1 (seems almost quaint by this stage but you have to respect your elders)
06/ Civil War (some people crap on it but I really liked the depiction of the villain)
07/ Iron Man 3 (some people crap on it but I really liked the depiction of the villain)
08/ Dr Strange (perfectly acceptable fun)
09/ Ant-Man (perfectly acceptable fun)
10/ Thor (perfectly acceptable fun)
11/ Avengers 2 (not so lean, kinda mean, sputtering team-up machine)
12/ Captain America (fine, I guess, but I’m never interested in re-watching it)
13/ Iron Man 2 (the remainder are the bad ones but at least this one has RDJ)
14/ Incredible Hulk (it never got a sequel and they rebooted the character and the actor; speaks for itself)
15/ Thor 2 (I liked the bit with the guy from IT Crowd)

  1. Avengers (it was a genre-defining event, it will always be #1 for me)
  2. Civil War (quite different from the rest and it had the right amount of seriousness and fun)
  3. Captain America: The Winter Soldier (damn near perfect movie)

And then the rest, with Thor 2 probably at the bottom, while not being bad. Not really a big fan of the Guardians movies, even though I liked them.

This will be Marvel’s best year for movies yet.

I think on reflection we’ll see lots of reference to that in posts on here and in articles on other sites, that the superhero movie isn’t dead - Marvel have just had a beast of a year in 2017.

1 - Iron Man 3 (9)
2 - Cap 2 Winter Soldier (9)
3 - GotG (8)
4 - Cap 3 Civil War (8)
5 - Dr Strange (8)
6 - Incredible Hulk (8)
7 - Thor (7)
8 - Ant Man (7)
9 - Avengers (6)
10 - Iron Man (6)
11 - Thor 2 (6)
12 - Iron Man 2 (6)
13 - Avengers AoU (5)
14 - Captain America (4)

I’d probably watch the top 7 or 8 again at some point, the others I don’t think I would, although there’s nothing there I came out the cinema disliking apart from the first Cap movie and probably AoU.

The rest range from 6/10 to 9/10 in my mental rating scale.

Fully expect GotG 2 and Thor 3 to break into the top 5.
Forgot about Homecoming.

  1. Thor Ragnarok.
  2. Black Panther
  3. Avengers 3.
  4. Avengers 1
  5. Captain America 2
  6. Gotg 2
  7. Dr Strange
  8. Spider-man Homecoming
  9. GotG
  10. Avengers 4
  11. Civil War
  12. Thor
  13. Avengers 2
  14. Iron Man
  15. Ant-man
  16. Captain Marvel
  17. Iron Man 3
  18. Captain America
  19. Incredible Hulk.
  20. Thor 2.
  21. Iron Man 2.

Winter Soldier
Iron Man
Guardians 2
Civil War
Iron Man 3
Doc Strange
Avengers 2 (I’m a sucker for Vision and am probably the only guy on Earth who likes Renner’s Hawkeye, so this is my guilty pleasure pick.)
Cap First Avenger
Ant Man
Iron Man 2

Thor 2 (Only MCU movie I have almost zero affection for. Most soulless and uninspired of the lot.)

Thor 2 weirdly has a better climax than most Marvel films but it’s hampered by the rest of its parts.

Because everybody loves stats, and @Jim is probably too busy to do them at the moment, here’s the aggregated Millarworld ranking:

For a while GOTG 2 was narrowly leading Avengers, then a couple of people who haven’t seen it yet weighed in and it slipped, and Winter Soldier got some last-minute love.

(Methodology: from all lists that gave an actual ranking, a first place spot scores 15 points, a last place spot scores 1 point, zero points if a movie wasn’t listed, and @TMasters ranking of Black Panther etc was ignored :stuck_out_tongue: )

The Thor love is interesting.

It wasn’t too long ago that would have probably been a bit lower on the list - I wonder if people have enjoyed it more since on a rewatch or whether they reminded how fun the character can be by the Ragnarok trailers…

Oh - and there were 15 lists submitted, so the theoretical maximum score (if everybody ranked a movie top) is 225.
