James Bond: movies, books and comics news

#582

He was probably very well paid by the time he left, but there was a big gap between his last film and Craig’s first one, so money can’t be the whole story, even if it was part of it?

It seems, from the various reports, that they just decided to make a clean break when they brought the character back.

EDIT:
I just checked, it was a four year gap, so not huge, just (possibly) significant.

Die Another Day was savaged by the critics at the time. In the meantime, EON got the rights to Casino Royale. So it seemed a good opportunity to go in a different direction from the dodgy CGI of the Brosnan era and make things a little bit more flesh and blood and bring in a new guy, rather than do one last movie with Pierce.

#584

I think the action in DAD is great and exhilirating, but the CGI looks rushed. It ruins the amazing stunts. I mean, Bond surfing on top of the waves, while escaping death laser is done so incredulously bad. And Pierce looks like prematurely aged when compared his look in Goldeneye.

But the movie has unseen vehicle. Yummie.

#585

Well, between WINE and DAD has been three years and DAD and CR four, so I guess you are right. At the time, they probably were planning to reboot the franchise.

#586

I don’t know about prematurely aged… Give the guy a break. He was pushing 50 at the time.

I would be happy if I look that good when I’m 50…or as good as Roger Moore for that matter.

#587

I would have been happy if I looked that good at 25, he’s a seriously handsome man.

Terrible singer though, there’s a Mamma Mia sequel coming, prepare your earholes.

#588

Brosnan was dropped because the producers wanted to take Bond in a more grounded direction to reflect the post-9/11 world.

#589

I get the impression that they definitely felt the fantasy side was out of hand, despite the fact that films were still doing well.

You can factor in Jason Bourne as well, everyone did at the time.

Plus, as Simon said, they had a chance to do Casino Royale. That meant rebooting Bond, even if didn’t mean changing M.

#590

At the time, Martin Campbell was asked about that (i.e. Judi Dench having been the new M in Pierce Brosnan’s first movie and then the boss to the young Bond in Casino Royale). His argument was that if you have the chance to cast Judi Dench in your movie, you cast Judi Dench in your movie.

#591

That’s the same logic Vin Diesel used in The Chronicles of Riddick.

#592

Exactly. And you’re not going to argue with Vin Diesel now, are you?

I loved Chronicles of Riddick btw. I just liked the idea of a Space Conan.

#593

He apparently talked Dench into being in the movie by nerding out about D&D. Her comment was she had no idea what he was talking about but he sure was passionate about it.

#594

Now that we are here, who do pick for best gunbarrel sequence? I use to spend days and weeks currently and just watch it on yt from start to finish. And it never gets me bored.

Anyway, my best gunbarrels would be:

DAD
Goldeneye
FYEO
CR
DAF

Also, I consider Dalton to have the best walk and turn, but he messed it up with legs stretched and slight bow. Therefore, I pick Pierce.

#595

I believe he actually got her to play in a session and all.

#596

Pretty flawless logic.

#597

“No decision has been made at the moment, there’s a lot of noise out there and nothing official has been confirmed and I’m not, like, holding out for more money or doing anything like that. It’s just all very personal decisions to be made at the moment… I know they’re desperate to get going and I would in theory love to do it, but there is no decision, uh, just yet.”

#598

Pay him the money his agent is obviously demanding or say goodbye and start the hunt for the next actor.

Either is good publicity.

#599

Craig’s going to be doing the interview circuit for Logan Lucky for the next week or so, so we’ll see if he says anything more… or if the barrage of questions about it remind him why he wanted to quit in the first place.

There’s another (probably sketchy) rumour going around that he didn’t want to come back, but if he doesn’t, they’ll give it to Tom Hardy, who Craig doesn’t like:

#600

I like Hardy but I have no interest in seeing him as Bond.

#601

Nolan and Hardy teaming up for Bond? Don’t they want the audience to understand what the character is saying?

“Shhhkn… nyt sthrd.”
