Name: Michael Bettendorf

DOB: 7/31 - I share it with Harry Potter and my hippie uncle.

Occupation: Barista/Cafe Manager - Writer (Go figure, eh?)

Fave Comics Ever: Miller and Jansen’s Daredevil, Roche Limit, Shutter. J. Michael Strazcynski’s Thor.

Last Good Comic You Read: I’ve been extremely impressed by Seven to Eternity. Also, East of West - Hickman and Dragotta are master world builders.

Fave Movies Ever: Lucky Number Slevin, Snatch, Kiss Kiss Bang Bang, Hook, Home Alone 2.

Last Good Movie You Saw: Swiss Army Man wrecked me in a lot of ways. Impressed by how well they displayed humanity, anchored in the absurdity.

What’s your Earliest Memory? Perhaps it’s just a glimpse, but I remember holding a Peter Pan action figure in the front room of my parent’s old house on Christmas morning. I was 3.

When And Where Were You Happiest? I’m pushing 2.5 years of marriage and I haven’t royally ruined anything and we’re not completely decimated by student loans (only slightly) - so I’d say now is pretty great.

Name Your Ideal Dinner Party of 5? Hmm. Living - Tom Hanks, Dan Harmon, Charlie Huston, Aubrey Plaza, Kate Micucci.

What did Your Parents Do? RN and Firefighter/Paramedic

How Do You Relax? A good cup of coffee or whiskey. Books, Music/playing and listening.

Tell Us 3 Secrets About You: 1. I have strange eyes - one is farsighted the other is nearsighted. 2. I didn’t like Mulholland Drive. 3. I most definitely judge customers on what coffee drinks they order.

#218

Welcome to Millarworld, Michael. I was barista for 12 years and a cafe manager for 4 of that before I went back to school for engineering. What kinda of cafe do you work at?

#219

Ha! I do the same thing while I’m standing on line behind them.

Welcome to the boards, Michael!

#220

Good gawd, now there’s TWO of them!

#221

That’s awesome - and a huge commitment! My job is great (the people mostly) but I am currently seeking to leave the industry. Unfortunately it’s more out of necessity than anything. Our cafe is pretty unique, at least to our area. I live in a university town and so local coffee places and bars flourish, but we combine both and act sort of like a bistro. We have booze, specialty coffee and a menu of food. Mostly sandwiches, bagels/melts, soup - that sorta thing. Our store owner has had the place for 22-23 years. He does all of the coffee roasting and I have to admit, we have some of the best in town - no bias or anything =P ha.

I loved coffee before this job, but over the past couple of years I have truly grown to appreciate what goes into a ‘real’ cup of coffee and what makes good espresso. What kind of place did you manage? What was your drink of choice?

#222

I managed a Barnes & Noble cafe but I have always had friends who work in smaller shops with better coffee. One of my buddies was a regional barista champion and now works for Cafe Imports.

My drink of choice is a Cortado with a single origin espresso. Ethiopians tend to be my favorite. I really like a One and One if the cafe offers it. What’s your drink of choice?

#223

That’s awesome! We have a few latte art competitions around town, but I don’t enter them.

Cortados are nearly perfect drinks. Typically I go for drip coffee. I know it’s a bit boring ha. I prefer our Mexico and Papua New Guinea beans. We had a Mexican Altura - single crop, single origin for a while and that was the best espresso I’ve ever had. Our espresso is a blend of 2-3 beans, but I can’t quite remember what he uses. Usually Ethiopian, French and something else.

My favorite espresso drink changes, but it’s between an Americano, a cortado and our cafe au lait. We make ours New Orleans style and use espresso with chicory, instead of drip coffee, and steamed milk.

The Nikolaus will then come and put sweets and little presents into those boots, if you have been nice enough throughout the year. Sometimes parents would volunteer and a real, well costumed, Nikolaus and a Knecht Ruprecht – who punishes the bad children – will go from door to door and read from the book of the good children) and this is where my memory sets in. Nikolaus and Knecht Ruprecht were at my house and I was so anxious, I took hold of my buttock and squeezed my toy dog real hard, while he was reading from the book. Luckily, everything went well =D I was about 3 or 4, I guess

At the same time I cannot stop believing, that people wouldn’t treat me unfair, because I truly believe in the good in people…even if I’m at the bank or have someone on the phone trying to sell something to me…
I like to burst out into singing, laughing, talking to myself or dancing just because…as I am growing older, I am getting less embarrassed about it when it happens in public though
