Open Submissions For New Short Story Anthology

Deserted By Dignity wants you here as well
Hi,
Building on the success of The Redundancy of Flightless Birds, Deserted By Dignity is proud to announce that we are taking open submissions of short stories for our next anthology, tentatively titled The Inevitable Betrayal Of Your Dignity By Alcohol. Sounds good right? Of course, but there are some rules, so keep reading.

Stories must be between 3,000 and 8,000 words. Though we may allow in pieces shorter than the lower limit, chances are that if you’ve not hit it, either your story isn’t big enough or you’re compressing it too much. If it’s over 8,000 then it needs cutting down.

Submitted work must be your own. That means not only must it be written entirely by you, but it must feature only characters that you’ve created and own. We’re not publishing fan-fiction and we’d rather not get sued over a defamatory cameo by Harry Potter getting mugged for crack money in an alley by Wolverine.

Also, nothing libellous please. We’d go as far to suggest that you shouldn’t use any real people in your stories at all. Again, getting sued isn’t an enticing prospect.

You must be able to grant us the right to print it. We’re not going to claim ownership of your story or anything, that stays completely with you. But if it’s been printed elsewhere, chances are we won’t be able to print it as well. And we’d rather have all-new material to use anyway.

Your work can be of any genre, theme or style. We’re open to receiving anything from short space operas to intimate dissections of personal relationships and anything in-between. You can be funny, scary, romantic, thought-provoking or all at the same time. Swearing, sex and violence is also ok, although we do have some taste boundaries (we’ll let you know if you hit them) and outright erotic fiction most probably won’t be used. Also, we’re likely not going to be very receptive to drippy emo-vampire stories, because we’re all sick of Twilight. Speaking of…

Be original. Sounds obvious, but don’t be afraid of trying something new. Although we are only accepting prose submissions (no poetry or scripts please), it is a wide-ranging medium that allows for tremendous variations in tone and presentation. Be creative.

We can’t guarantee feedback on every submission. Sorry, it’s impossible to promise that we can. We will read every story sent to us, but we probably won’t have time to give detailed feedback for every submission. Every submitter will be contacted about whether their work is picked or not.

There’s no money up-front. We’re a incredibly small operation and can’t afford to pay anyone up front for their stories, not even the writers returning from the previous volume. So why bother? Well, beyond getting to see your name and work in print, all writers included in the anthology will split a percentage of the profits from each copy sold. How much that is depends on how many copies we sell, obviously, so it’d do you well to promote the book as much as you can, everywhere you can. We’re not called Deserted By Dignity for nothing, you know.

Please email your stories as a .doc attachment to DesertedByDignity@gmail.com before 30th September. Title your document and your email with your name and the name of your story. You can also send any and all questions to this email address or twitter them to @DesertedDignity if that sort of thing floats your boat.

Thanks and good luck,
Martin S Smith
Deserted By Dignity.

Good luck with this. I may submit something if I can think something up.

hmmm. I'm far more focussed on doing comics, but I may be able to come up with something for this. The title of the book alone makes me want to be a part of it. I've one project that I think would work pretty well in prose, at least to start with.

This sounds cool. I have a few short proses I wrote before. Let me look through them or I'll just write up something brand new. I will be submitting something to this before the deadline. Thanks for the heads up.

Just a quick bump to say that you've only got two months before the submissions period closes (I say 'only' it's a long time - but not to write!). Already had some stories in and competition to get into the anthology is fierce! Like a hungry, rabid racoon trying to get some food from a homeless man.

Working on one right now...i thought I knew exactly what it was going to be...then it changed... and keeps changing...I feel like I'm just along for the ride at this point but hopefully it all makes sense in the end.
