A Fistful of Comics - Feedback Thread

Hello all!

Well, Fistful will be off to the printers in the morning. I have to say it looks brilliant. Every story is exceptional and you can see the care and work each contributor put into it. It warms my heart to see this be such a team effort, and it's turned out far above any expectations I had for the book.

First a bit of bad news. I had planned on getting a table at Wizard World Chicago to sell the book. Unfortunately it's on the weekend of my sisters birthday - normally I wouldn't care. Well this year she turns 30 so without my knowledge she bought me and the wife tickets to go on a trip with her over her birthday weekend. And I'm not bad enough of a brother to turn her down. We will have representation at the show with Mike Champion and Vic, and I'll be mailing a copy to all the major publishers talent departments (you don't hand out books at the show as professionals get tired carrying things around).

As a result I trimmed my order somewhat and we ended up at 480 copies ordered.

However, with that comes a bit of good news. We will be doing two more books because this was quite brilliant fun and I want it to continue. The next two books (A Few Comics More and the Good, the Bad and the Comical) will be future projects that I'll oversee like I did this time. I'll start making noise about the second book near the end of September for a January-February 2011 launch. It'll be the same as before - pitches first, then I'll form teams. I will say it'll be open to everyone, including new people who find the forum as a result of the first book. No saving spots - I'm not making any guarantees that those who were in the first book will make a reappearance, in fact I'll probably look at the feedback to establish what books were popular.

So what now?

1) I'll get the books from the printers around August 15th. Over the course of the next 10 days after then I'll get packages put together and sent out. There's over 50 packages to send altogether so please be patient with me. I'll keep you all updated and will let you know when something is sent.
2) I'll have a few spares but at this time don't want to take any more big orders. If folks want to order large packages (25+) themselves I can help out with that using Ka Blam. I'll work out the details with folks individually.
3) Around 60 days after print I'll create a .cbr of the book so folks can download it if they want. I figure it might be a good way of getting folks to read the book but waiting for some time doesn't bother those who actually bought a copy.
4) Get feedback. For alot of people this'll be the first time friends and family see their work in print. Ask for feedback, and enjoy the experience. And tell us all about the comments you get. You're part of a large group with this book and everyone is interested in hearing your stories.
5) Invite people to the forum. Hopefully our book gets some attention and helps the creative forum get a boost in energy. My goal all along was to help folks out who wanted to work on comics but didn't know how to start. That'll be the goal for future contributors too and I think that's pretty cool for Millarworld. So when you're in the bar tell folks about this cool place that'll hook artists up with writers. That has inkers who help bring out the best in new artists. That had letterers who'll make a strip look awesome. And that this place can get your story read by hundreds of people all over the world. Because that's what we're going to achieve here.

This is the new thread for all things Fistful so if you have any comments or questions post away.

Jim

Excellent news Jim, really looking forward to seeing this book, I haven't seen the lettered pages of Indian Death Drama and to be honest I don't want to, I'd rather wait to see them in my hand, it makes it all the more exciting for me that way. I'm also looking forward to reading and seeing the completed work of the other contributors to this book.

I'll cetainly be picthing artwork for the next book, so will spending the next few months trying to hone the skills that little bit more.

Thanks to yourself for doing this for us, Sarah for the wonderful piece of writing and everyone else for just making this book work. Oh and thank you to the people who have bought the book so far.

It has been an absolute pleasure contributing towards this book and I want to thank Jim for taking the risk of setting this up (people could have been indifferent to the idea), taking the time to explain things to people, being very calm and strict, and on a personal level for picking me to contribute four pages.

It feels great that we all were a part of this team, and it's something that we will always have in common - fantastic.

I wouldn't worry about not getting a few more orders after the bleeding cool article - I don't think people who read it there would really do that. However, the exposure there was great, and people will now know the name and the book.

Great job guys.

Crosses his fingers and waits for the green light for the other 8 pages so he can get his team to kill it yet again!

Good to hear that everything is moving along smoothly and good to know that two more books will be coming out. I plan to pitch an idea as soon as the new thread opens up.

And thanks for making all this possible Jim. It's been a hell of a ride and it ain't over yet!

Jim, whatever books are left over from WWChicago, I'll be more than happy to purchase! Unless Vic wants them. Sorry you won't make it, but that's totally understandable! Family always comes first. Thank you, again, for setting up this project. I can't wait to see the final book! :)

Awesome. Though I guess this means I should come up with some ideas to pitch for the next two issues then.

Congratulations to everyone involved. I can't wait to have this in hand. I'm waiting to read all of the stories till then.

Jim - Have you thought about submitting the .cbr file to ComiXology? I'm not sure what their requirements are but there is huge potential for reaching a large audience there. Comics look brilliant on their app as well.

Awesome news.

Richard and myself had been excited to continue The Rockette, so it looks like this'll be a great opportunity to do so if people like it!

Looking forward to working with you guys again, it was good fun.

3 cheers for Mr Ohara are in order, I think.

HIP HIP!

It is pretty difficult to get through to comixology for them to distribute (as I've been trying for a while with no response on the Paper Street properties). That said, I've been working with Graphic.Ly and they are going to knock it out of the park in the upcoming months with their online app. Hopefully, I'll see if they want to get something set up there.

Thanks for the info, Victor. Let me know if you ever get ComiXology to distribute. I am a huge fan of their app. I checked on Grapic.Ly and they have an iPhone app but no native iPad app.

oooh, looking forward to getting my hands on this. will be pitching for the sequel as well, no doubt, but going to try and come up with something that'll fit the format a bit better, if only to make it easier on the artist. only getting 20 copies myself, and my LCS is taking some, but I will be at Thought bubble to help pimp the book there, and should sell the rest of my issues to friends and maybe family.

Hello everyone.

Below is a link to the proof of the comic from Ka-Blam. It's a digital version of the whole comic in pdf format. I thought folks might want to see the completed work.

LINK

I'm going to give 24 hours for anyone to share any errors they may find with the proof, but I've gone through it half a dozen times and I think all looks good.

I also think this comic is rather excellent - you should all be very proud.

Jim

Disappointed I couldn't get Paypal to work and thus couldn't order some copies. Looks like you all put together a very nice product for a great price. Hopefully this does well enough to justify doing more issues as I'd both love to read them and potentially get in on the creative action.

I genuinely can't wait to get my hands on a paper copy of this!

Well done to all involved and a massive well done to Jim for coordinating the thing!

Sounds like a deal. Though if you'd like, I have this book I'm about to make available for sale and I could probably send you a copy without too much hassle. Just throwing out another option, in case we're never get a chance for that beer. :D

Either way I'll be sending along my address and thanks much for getting a copy to me.
