----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- ----------------

Hello Everyone,

After being the self-publishing trenches for over six years I figured it was about time that I created a thread for Paper Street Comics on the message board that really helped get me started in this whole endeavor.

The “quick” history – I fell back in love with comics in the early 2000’s when I moved to Chicago and the local comic shop recommended Millar’s Ult. X-men and Bendis’s Jinx. This eventually led to me attempting my own run at a title, which failed miserably because I rushed through creating an issue without thinking the process through. Flash forward two years, when I met Millar in person at the Chicago convention and we had a casual conversation about chasing dreams, writing, and self-publishing. The talk helped get me back on track and with the additional advice from several members of this board Paper Street Comics hit that second stage of its evolution.

Where we are at now – Over the past five years I’ve been working the 50+ hour a week corporate day job and investing any additional income and time into the comic book endeavor on nights and weekends. We’ve put out the complete “Pencilneck” series (4 issues) with the 124+ page trade and had our 15 minutes in the spotlight with potential movie deals at the close of 2008. In the year 2009 we’ll have the first two issues of “The Elite,” our first colored superhero comic, and “The Legend of Red,” our first horror project, launched - with hopes of a kid friendly series and a sci-fi book seeing print before the fourth quarter.

This thread – I am an addict… Yes, like the many of you that browse these boards I spend the majority of my online time as a Millar-Worlder. To show my appreciation to the good men and women of this plot of ground in cyberspace I’ll be running free preview downloads, exclusive content (wallpapers and sketches), and will post advance looks at what we have coming down the pipeline. My goal is to update this once a week with some new content to keep you all coming back for more. That said – this is your place to discuss any and everything Paper Street Comics.

Thank you,
Victor Carungi

Speaking of content:

Pencilneck – The first two issues for free –
Jonathan Kincaid is a mild mannered banker with an undiscovered violent streak and has spent the last 22 years of his life punishing himself for the incarceration off his twin brother, Jeffrey. In those years he’s repressed even the slightest feelings of anger which has turned him into a weak-willed pencilneck of a bank manager.

All of that changes when three mob associates crash into his life and offer a trade – the life of his debtor brother in exchange for helping them rob his bank. Jonathan is left with a choice - save the brother he hasn’t seen in years or do nothing and watch him die.[/i]

Just a note to say, everyone should read Pencilneck. It's really good. If you like Criminal you'll like it.

The Elite is great too. I didn't see the ending to Issue 1 coming - it's original in that regard.

Thanks Jim!

A lot of you have asked for the previews (in other indy threads that we've had on the boards in the past) so hopefully you'll all take advantage of them being out there for free. :)

Downloaded issue one and loved it! I'll be getting the trade for sure! Do you have any idea what the shipping to the UK would be on it?

EDIT: Followed the links, turns out it's only $9 (so about five quid) for international P+P. Order placed!

Combine your order to pick up Elite, and cut down on shipping - or wait until next week when I post "The Elite" (issue #1 for free) to see if you want to get those issues with it.

Thanks for the support Bruce - Know that I will most likely jump the gun and post Elite early (because I am of an impatient sort) :)

Checked out the 2 issues of Pencilneck, I have to say I was pleasantly surprised with the book. Good dialogue and characterization, the preview definitely left me interested for the rest of the story. Good job, Victor.

Thanks Antonio!

New review has just been posted for "The Legend of Red" - here at:

http://fromthetomb.wordpress.com/2009/06/0...f-red-1-review/

My first interview on Pencilneck with a blurb is also found here:

http://www.sfsite.co...graphica272.htm

Pencilneck notes worth mentioning - Millarworld's own Keith Chan, Butch Mapa, and Jason Mendoza contributed artwork in the pin-up extras with Marc Lewis providing gray tones in the later issues and colors on all of the individual covers. So check out the free issues (only up until Wednesday night) and click back on the thread as I'll be posting a preview of "The Elite" next week!!!

Thank you for all of the PM's on Pencilneck! I appreciate the response, now go and spread the word to your fellow indy comic readers. If you know of any people who do reviews (or if you yourself review comics) then please post the links to them and on my next website refresh I'll link back to your comments.

UPDATE - Posted below is my take on two of my guilty pleasures - Comics and Reality Television. The first three images include an advertisement (which will be in American Jesus #1) and the first two covers. Then there is a free download link to the first full colored issue.

Enjoy and post your comments!

Wow victor I loved the free issue of The Elite. I liked how you used the worlds current obsession with reality tv for this story.

Enjoyed the first issue of The Elite. Its great strength is in the characters -- they all seem like believably real people, and they are very much a typical bunch of reality TV contestants (all the archetypes are there). It's going to be fun watching them grow into superheroes.

The art reminded me of Brent Anderson in places. That's a good thing :)

Is this going to be a mini or an ongoing series?

Thanks Guys!

The Elite will be ongoing for as long as I can afford to publish issues. The first arc is 6 issues, but as you can tell from this first one, my issues don't run 22 pages. Because of all the different characters you'll see every floppy coming in with 28 to 30 pages of story each. The ending for each issue will have a nice catch to it and my goal is to have this series be my own little superhero universe to play with.

If Marvel or DC never come calling then I can get out all of the stories I've wanted to tell through "The Elite" - so out of all of the projects we have coming out, this one would probably be the most ambitious.

I'll be out in LA this next week so please spread the word on "The Elite" and share the files so that more people know of its existence (and I appreciate every new reader, believe me). By the end of June I'll throw the files up here for "The Legend of Red" but until then - here is a character sketch image that we've been playing around with for our kids book that should be out in August.

Take care and thanks for posting.

VC

Awesome, let me know your thoughts when you finish reading through.

I'm in LA for a vacation but am meeting with a couple of people and so far we've seen a nice response from some of the newer titles. Keep the fingers crossed and keep spreading the word.

(heads back away from the computer as a line is waiting to use it)

Thanks guys!

Aris - the link most likely expired (it had a week deadline). If you still want to review the books then I'll have to see how much more space I have on "yousendit" and I'll try reposting the links for you (but please download when they post or else they expire).

I should be getting back colored pages (with letters) from the series "The Legend of Red" - this series is based off of the Brothers Grimm fairy tale and I plan on launching a four issue mini, that would extend to more 4 issue runs.

Here are some sample colored covers (pages soon).

Woop woop! Finally got my hands on Pencilneck... and it was well worth the wait! I've only read the first issue so far (as I'm away out just now) but I've I must admit I was surprised by the high standard of the story and writing - it rattles along at a good pace and has left me wanting more! Easily as good as many of the trade I've bought from bigger companies over the years.

Onto “The Legend of Red” – this story was a submission originally sent through to Shadowline in their Super Heroine contest. I loved the project so much that I decided to run with the retelling of the Brothers Grimm class “Little Red Riding Hood”. The first issue is currently available (with the colored version out next week). A link to our first review is below and if you would like to review any of our issues then PM or e-mail me and I’ll send you the rest of the files. Thank you - VC

Great stuff. I always been a sucker for werewolves. Page 7 panel 5 I think has a spelling mistake though.
