Whitney Houston, superstar of records, films, dies

LOS ANGELES (AP) – Whitney Houston, who reigned as pop music's queen until her majestic voice and regal image were ravaged by drug use, has died. She was 48.

Publicist Kristen Foster said Saturday that the singer had died, but the cause and the location of her death were unclear.

At her peak in the 1980s and '90s, Houston the golden girl of the music industry and one of the world's best-selling artists.

Among her hits were "How Will I Know," "Saving All My Love for You" and "I Will Always Love You." She won multiple Grammys including album and record of the year.

Her success carried her beyond music to movies like "The Bodyguard."

But by the end of her career, drug use took its toll as her record sales plummeted and her voice became raspy and hoarse.

It was always very sad to watch her fall so hard.

Strangely enough, Twitter seems to think that she was killed by wasps... something makes me think there's a more obvious culprit.

Unbelievably sad. Even sadder is that I think the real Whitney Houston died years ago, the moment her loving husband introduced her to the joy of drugs.

The word is that she's very good in, what would have been, her comeback to acting;

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1876451/

It's sad when someone throws away a great life, but it's just a bit worse when they were still capable of coming back from the brink, and was even in the process of doing so.

I wasn't a fan of most of her music either, certainly not the surypy ballads, she had that brief 'urban' phase that had some decent tunes. Either way she was an amazing vocalist.

She had the best voice of her generation. Even today there's maybe only 3-5 women who could sing like her. It's awful to see drugs ruin so many talented lives.

Sad news, she had great talent but I imagine she'll be remembered more for the darker aspects of her life.

I liked some of her songs. Not the syrupy ballads though, although for that genre they were good songs.

It's sad to see someone fuck up their amazingly priviliged life and talents.

Which is fair enough, they aren't songs I love at all but I have seen enough talent shows on TV to see that nobody has come close to singing them as well as she has. In fact when any of them choose a Whitney song (or her godmother Aretha Franklin) I ask if they are sane to even try. Sing a Madonna or Kylie song.

I can admire the skills involved in various artforms that I don't personally go for.

I don't mean this to insult Whitney in her RIP thread but just as an observation, but I much prefer Dolly Parton's original version of "I Will Always Love You."

Whitney's voice was really something though.

Sad news, she had great talent but I imagine she'll be remembered more for the darker aspects of her life.

I think those aspects, especially now because of her early death, will always be there when anyone thinks of her or makes a documentary that includes her in some way, but she made enough really successful recordings that she'll mostly be remembered for that.

People will play a track, think, "What a shame." and then play another one.

Twitter somehow became convinced that she had been killed by wasps. Because some people will believe absolutely anything.
