I didn't even mind emo Parker, my main problem was that the story didn't make sense.

My problem with Aunt May was that she didn't seem like a real character. She was just put in the movie to dispense these trite, cliche bits of fortune cookie wisdom. "Oh we need some emotional soulsearching stuff here, let's make up some old crap for Aunt May to say..."

Exactly Arjan, she seems more layered in the comics compared to the film. Like being conflicted about loving someone after Ben, still freaking out that she can't look after Peter as well as his real mother, going as far as putting her own prejudices aside to protect Peter by pulling a gun on Brock, being pissed Peter didn't tell her sooner about being Spider-Man, almost throwing Peter out at one point etc.

Problem saying May seems more layered in comics compared to the films is the fact she's had (I'm guessing) less than 40 minutes on screen time across the movies compared to appearing pretty damned regularly in the comics for 50 years or so.

I guess that would make sense if you've read all 50 years of those comics. Movies manage to make layered characters all the time (even supporting ones) without the need of years of worth of movies backing them up. I never much cared about Aunt May in the comics anyway. Until Ultimate Spider-Man, at least. I found her quite a bit more interesting in those comics pretty early on, and those didn't have years of backstory at the time. Making her quite a bit younger helped me to connect to her for one. I always thought it weird in the regular universe that young Peter Parker's aunt was older than my grandma. Even now my aunts, who are both several years older than my parents, don't look as old as Aunt May always does. And I'm closing in on 30. And my parents didn't have me until they were in their 30s.

Yeah, Uncle Ben and Aunt May in the Raimi movies only make sense if they are the aunt and uncle of Peter's dad and all other relatives have died.

to be fair, there aren't many characters in comics who do look older than Aunt May.

Let's see how much longer that lasts for, she's been aging backwards since BND, fantastic the wonders a bullet wound can do for a pensioner these days.

Anyone else see the clip on yesterday's Colbert? I'm totally sold on Martin Sheen as Uncle Ben now. Really brings the character, who's usually a cipher, to life. Hints of Sheen as Bartlett and Ultimate Uncle Ben in there.

Peter having a skateboard in his schoolbag still seems a little odd, but I can live with that.

I saw there's an article on ComicVine (I haven't read it though) that has 4 clips from Amazing Spider-Man, some containing spoilers. Which seems like an odd marketing strategy. But then again, you can't spoil much of his origin story. Unless those clips concern something very important about his father, Uncle Ben or something to do with Conners.

The Assholish Spider-Man...

Okey, seriously, I didn't like the clip:

- There is something off about the tone of the banter.
- How did Spider-Man get into the car?
- Why did he wait until the the thief was in the car?
- The cop almost killed the thief while shooting at Spider-Man.

I can see why Jameson would think Spiderman is a menace after seeing that video. It makes spiderman incredibly unlikable.

It's obviously early in his hero excursions - he hasn't yet leaned the immortal words...

'With great Power, comes a great need to not be a dickhead.'

That's what I was thinking - he's still naive and cocky. He hasn't even got the hang of web-swinging yet.

Couldn't agree more! The tone of the dialogue is horrible. The whole scene with the car thief plays like a bad (fully costumed) screen test. The character of Spider-Man is unrelatable so far from everything I've seen, and that doesn't bode well. As the scene plays on, that movie score..... Ugh.

Pretty harsh assessment for a snippet out of context.
If you discovered you had Super powers and tried them out for the first time, well... it probably wouldn't be too slick. I thought it worked. All a bit awkward, excited and messy.

Like most folks first time. ;)

I've been avoiding clips and such until the film comes out, I wanted it to be fresh and new when I watched it, but after reading some of the comments here I got worried that maybe it wouldn't be the film I wanted it to be, I was so determined to love this film, maybe I was wrong. So I watched the clips and holy Jesus I do love this film, pitch perfect for me. The Flash scene made so much sense, I really believed Garfield there, in my opinion he did a better job in that small clip than Tobey did in three films. This is the early days, he's only just discovered his spider powers, his world and who he is has been turned on his head, he sees an opportunity to get a little bit of revenge on the guy who has made his life a living hell for most of his life and he takes it. he only intends to humiliate him a little bit, then find he enjoys it and takes it further and further. The car scene is another extension of him getting a bit too giddy with his new found powers (although how did he get into the car?), he's enjoying being the big man in his early days, he's inexperienced so he's not really making the best job of the superheroing, he's been a bookish nerd all his life and now he's beating on thugs, he clearly gets a kick out of it before the supervillains come along and it all gets real and heavy.

I get that it is supposed to be cocky Spider-Man, but I still feel there is something off.
