Hello:

I just heard news from sports talk radio that
Peyton's neck problems are a LOT more
serious than everyone thought. The neck is not
healing right and he may need more surgery now
etc.

That's exactly what I'd expect Indianapolis to say 2 weeks before cutting Manning.

I could see him going to San Fran, too.

That would be such an epic slap in Alex Smith's face.

No way San Fran do that to Alex Smith. I think it's 70% Arizona, 20% Miami, 10% Washington.

Or Houston. I don't know if we have enough crippled QBs.

Wildcard in the Peyton Manning sweepstakes: Seattle.

Chewy...................................................... Arizona is the favorite, but they have to make the decision to swallow Kolb's contract.

Hello:

Here is an article:

At one time or another, the Indianapolis Colts have been totally alright with cutting Peyton Manning, looking to trade him, 100 percent committed to him and completely unsure of his health. At least, that's how the whole saga has played out in the media. The only clarity that remains in this situation is the fact that Manning is not 100 percent healthy, and that itself is a misnomer because it's likely that 100 percent has a new definition with Manning.

If 100 percent is the best you possibly can be, then maybe Manning is there, but it's significantly less than the 100 percent of Manning a year ago, if that makes sense. Either way, there's question marks surrounding his health, ans as opposed to clarity, we're getting even more uncertainty, thanks to Sports Illustrated. SI.com had a report, citing NFL sources, saying that Manning underwent a fourth medical procedure on top of the three that have been previously reported.

While it cannot be determined exactly when the unreported procedure on Manning's neck took place, it was at some point after his May 23 surgery in Chicago to correct a bulging disk, and before his Sept. 9 one-level cervical neck fusion surgery in Marina Del Rey, Calif. The same doctor who operated on Manning's bulging disk in May did a follow-up procedure last summer in Chicago, as a result of the original surgery.

In essence, when Manning had his reported third neck procedure in September, it was actually his fourth. With the added weight of that news, SI.com also reports, via league sources, that Manning's neck has developed bone spurs above the point where his latest fusion surgery took place.

Those spurs won't necessarily physically impede Manning on the football field right away, and he could return whenever he did plan to if the spurs didn't develop, but they are an issue that will eventually need to be addressed. The report says that Manning will likely require further surgery at some point. There's plenty more in the piece, but it's looking more bleak by the day for Manning, who hoped to return at some point late last season.

A decision needs to be made on Manning very soon, given the upcoming roster bonus that is owed to him. If the team doesn't feel comfortable with his health, he could be on his way out, even if there's a chance of returning in 2012.

Another report said that Manning was throwing very wobbly spirals in
practice late in the season when he was trying to comeback.

Imho, he should just retire.

He is slated to get $28M from the Colts if all goes well, but it just
doesn't look good.

From working in Physical Therapy and talking to Doctors or as I like to call it 'kissing ass' aka marketing. Many of them think he won't be the same and should NOT return to football. But I feel he wants to give it a try. I know I would probably just walk away from the game. His neck issues are pretty serious, but than again I'm not a NFL player...they are a different breed.

Why not? San Fran wants to win a SUperbowl. Alex Smith is not a superbowl QB.

Yeah, that's a pretty fair point. I thought his year was quite good, but I looked up the stats and they're nothing to shout about. Peyton though feels like a gamble - a long shot for a team that isn't close right now, but could be. If they trade for Peyton and he really can't play then the franchise might be hosed for a few years. While Smith isn't great, he's still better than half the QB's out there right now.

Report: Colts to release Peyton Manning

Peyton Manning's career with the Indianapolis Colts will come to a close this week, ESPN reported Tuesday.

According to the report, the Colts will officially cut ties with the four-time NFL MVP quarterback on Wednesday.

The Colts had until Thursday to pick up a $28 million option on Manning's contract for next season, but it was widely believed the team would not choose to pay the 35-year-old Manning that amount after he missed the entire 2011 season following several neck surgeries.

If Manning is not retained by the Colts he would become a free agent when the NFL year begins March 13.

Manning has been working out in recent weeks at Duke University, where his former offensive coordinator at Tennessee is the head coach.

There have been varying reports on Manning's current health, with the most significant question being how close his arm strength is to returning to normal.

Manning's father, Archie, said last week his son "looks fine" on the field, and on Saturday a short video was released of Manning throwing to Colts tight end Dallas Clark and wide receiver Austin Collie in an "aggressive throwing session."

The Colts are expected to use the first pick in April's draft to select former Stanford quarterback Andrew Luck, regardless of whether Manning is still in the fold.

Manning has spent his entire 14-year NFL career in Indianapolis after the Colts selected him with the top overall pick in 1998.

Since entering the league, Manning has led Indianapolis to 11 playoff appearances, two AFC titles and a Super Bowl victory in 2006-07.

The Colts finished 2-14 without the star signal caller under center last season. The abysmal performance prompted owner Jim Irsay to clean house by parting ways with longtime vice chairman Bill Polian and general manager Chris Polian.

Head coach Jim Caldwell also was sent packing along with several other members of the team's coaching staff.

And where will he land?

Not surprised by this one. No idea where he'll land. This is one area I have a history of calling poorly (case and point: BF to the Jets).

It would seem that The Jets and Redskins are out of the Manning sweepstakes. Sounds like Denver and KC have talked to him. As a Raiders fan, I don't really like that. On the other hand, I do think that Manning is one or two solid hits away from being finished. Not that I want to see that happen, but the injury certainly has to be a huge consideration for any team thinking about trying to sign him. He's what? 37? And he just missed a whole season due to a major injury that required multiple surgeries.

You're the first person to mention KC, that I've seen...but I would honestly be surprised if they got within spitting distance of him actually making his way here.

KC is one of the teams people are saying he might go. As of right now it seems its between- Denver, Miami, KC, Arizona and Seattle.

I did hear the Texans and 49ers might be interested. If the Texans got him and he was healthy...that team would be really, really good.
