Gazillion Entertainment, a leading developer, publisher and operator of massively multiplayer online (MMO) games, has revealed the first glimpse of the eagerly anticipated free-to-play online game "Marvel Heroes
."Taking the MMO category to a completely new level of excitement and engagement, "Marvel Heroes"combines action role-playing games with the MMO genre.
Drawing upon the 8,000-plus heroes and villains in the Marvel Universe, players become their favorite Marvel Super Heroes and explore such famous Marvel landscapes as the Savage Land, Hell’s Kitchen and Mutant Town. Players will combat villains and complete missions in randomized public zones as well as being able to discover and acquire their own cast of characters; from the well-known Avengers, Iron Man, Captain America, Thor, the Incredible Hulk, Hawkeye and Black Widow to the more obscure Squirrel Girl and Ka-Zar.
In Marvel’s Midtown Manhattan, the Xavier Institute for Higher Learning, and other famous Marvel locations, players can meet other players, gain missions and buy items from legendary Marvel characters. Fans will be able to customize heroes in countless ways by selecting and finding powers and costumes from each character’s rich history. Between powers to find and modify, costume pieces to collect and construct, and additional items to uncover, there are thousands of ways people can customize their experience.
Written by Brian Michael Bendis, author of ULTIMATE SPIDER-MAN, NEW AENGERS, SECRET INVASIONand countless other successes, "Marvel Heroes"is inspired by some of the most popular tales and events in Marvel Comics history.
David Brevik, President of Gazillion Entertainment and creator of the massive hit games "Diablo"and "Diablo II"says, "I’ve been a big Marvel fan for all of my life.'Marvel Heroes'represents the combination of Marvel IP with all of the knowledge and experience I gained creating 'Diablo.' It is a dream come true. I’m excited to unveil 'Marvel Heroes'and share this revolutionary MMO with both gamers and Marvel fans."
"'Marvel Heroes'is the pinnacle of Super Hero gaming," states TQ Jefferson, Vice President of Games at Marvel. "For fans to actually become their favorite heroes in an original storyline, explore iconic Marvel landscapes and combat some of the most dangerous villains in a shared experience is unbelievably compelling."

EDIT:
I wonder if the suit customisation means you can use other character's suits similar to X-Men Legacy. I never played it since the reviews were crap but that seemed like a nice idea. For Marvel Heroes it'd be pretty cool to add that, like put Wolverine in a SHIELD Uniform or Spider-Man in an X-Men outfit. Hopefully it'd be in the same vein as Beast having a Secret Avengers and X-Men version of the same suit:

I think me buying this will fully depend on the trial/demo and even that will depend on how good the reviews are. I still reckon a Marvel MMO would benefit from being based in the current Ultimate Marvel Universe since they could basically do what they liked with it but that's just me.

It does sound a bit...lacking in depth, but honestly, I doubt I'd be playing DCUO still now, even if the PSN hack/crash hadn't given me an enforced hiatus from that which turned into a complete quit.
I would have liked a Marvel MMO where you picked a starting "race" and were trained up alongside a particular team of characters though, but I think something like that might be better suited to a single player game. Still would have been cool to have a bunch of friends all in one class at Xaviers School, or as SHIELD recruits or something though.

I think about 80% of DCUO characters were some variation of Batman, and the rest were strangely powered versions of Superman, or looked like people had designed their costumes (and names) thinking they were still playing WoW.
So? As long as everyone's having fun what does it matter if 80% of the people make Wolverine/hulk/spidey clones? The other 20% will be making some really fun stuff.
I do hope the costume customisation is extensive though. Being able to mix and match various outfits would be good, but even just a selection of lets say every costume the character has worn, plain clothes, a SHIELD outfit, an outfit specific to whatever teams they are on (yes, AVENGERS leather jackets, NEW X MEN biker suits, etc) and maybe even a couple of newly designed wacky alternates might be nice.
From the IGN article, it doesn't look that way. It sounds like you just unlock complete uniform options, and while there might be several for each character, there doesn't seem to be any mixing them up, and probably nothing terribly creative, at least at first.

It would be perfect for an MMO. You'd just have Mutants (at Xaviers), Experiments (FF), Trained and Tech (SHIELD). Players could change teams or side with the Avengers neutral faction after like level 10 or 20. it's all ideally suited to the MMO experience. What isn't terribly well suited to MMOs is this Diablo clone game. They already have a single player version of this one, that even offers co-op, and it's called Marvel Ultimate Alliance. It might be a fun game, I'm not writing it off entirely, but it's a huge waste of potential already.

Exactly. I'm totally undecided on this game as it is and if the customisation is weak that would be a deal breaker. It'd be great to have EVERY suit that character has ever worn, but if it's only 5 different appearances or something like that then there would really be no point in the character customisation IMO. Using Wolverine as an example, I'd expect both his Ultimate suits, Ultimate Cable, WW2, his AOA suit (both before and after becoming a host to Apocalypse), his orange and brown suit, his street clothes, all his his film outfits, Patch, his feral bone claws suit, X-Force, Samurai Wolverine, Wolverine Noir, House Of M, Age of X, Old Man Logan and/or The Hooded Man, X-Men: The ENd, his Weapon X suit, the suit from when he was with Sabretooth and Maverick, Wolverine: the End with his long grey hair and broken claw, his Morrison's New X-Men suit, Horseman of Apocalypse, Days of Future Past, Zombieverse, the Astonishing X-Men alternate reality Logan with the moustache and cowboy hat, Phoenix Wolverine and Wrestler from his mini series with Spider-Man, his suit and tie from being Headmaster, Alpha and Omega and every version of his yellow and blue suit. From his whiskers when he first appeared in Hulk to his current Simone Biachi/Wolverine and The X-Men version. Maybe even give him Daken and Jimmy Hudson suits too.
And the option to remove and add pieces would be good too. Like, make Wolverine wear his current suit but put his movie jacket over the top and either pull his mask down so it's like a hood or remove it completely.
yeah, honestly Ogul, I haven't given much thought to a Marvel MMO.
I have
The best option for me, again, would be an Ultimate Universe MMO. Set in the current world would be best since they could really do what they liked and the insane amount on enemies and new heroes emerging would make sense with mutants being hunted, S.H.I.E.L.D. being decimated and The Children of Tomorrow and Tian going mental. Then your 'race' could be S.H.I.E.L.D/Ultimates depending on if you character was super-powered or not, Vigilantes - where you're pretty much on your own with the odd team- up - would be Spider-Man (Miles not Peter), Punisher (on the run again), Moon Knight (or Ronin, whichever he is now), Iron Fist etc and finally the X-Men.
Or if you want to be a villain you would be one of Reed's soldiers to counter S.H.I.E.L.D., a random super-villain like the new Scorpion to fill the Vigilante spot and a member of Tian to counter the X-Men or one of Stryker or even Deadpools Reavers. Actually, I could really see Deadpool being recruited by Stryker.
Plus there's the option of doing whatever the hell they liked with the storyline. Want to kill Thor to add gravitas to a mission? Why not, it won't piss off fans. Want his son to come back so you have a ridiculously overpowered guy/a Thor with a totally clean slate? Sure. Want Ultimate Kaine to some back? Go for it. Want Deadpool to start killing off mutants again? Perfect excuse for it what with Stryker, the X-Men going underground etc. You could really do what you like without worrying about continuity or doing something out of sync with the comics.
But then that would be in a perfect world.
Steer clear of X Men Legacy, Adam. It was crap with a capital CRAP.
Oh definitely, your review of it from ages ago is one of the reasons I didn't buy it. Same with Spider-Man: Edge of Time. The quality of the alternate suits made it really tempting but spending £40 on a below mediocre Spider-Man game just to use the Miles Morales, Future Foundation and Prodigy costumes is really not worth it.

Personally, I think either the Pre-HOM/Civil War MU or mid-Ultimates Ultimate U would work best for an MMO. Plenty of mutants, both X- and Brotherhood, SHIELD still a major player, and un the UU there are Ultimates reserves. A load of other mid-level guys, plenty of teams and opportunities for big-bads.
OH NO! stop thinking brain!
...Okay, so you start on Cybertron, pick a faction after being hatched out as a protoform...decide on a class, an alt mode, then go off to Earth to learn some skills in a relatively controlled environment before levelling up and getting your Minicons/Head-Target-Power-masters/special powers/cassette minions/combiner buddies/Pretender shell/etc etc etc across the various planets and eventually heading off into space to fight the Quintessons, The Fallen and ROM: Spaceknight.
