[Adam Wednesdays]

I finally got around to watching the first episode of "Mushishi." Love it. Now I can't believe I waited this long after hearing about it to watch it.

So, new season. I'm about three eps in on most of the new shows, nothing that's a huge standout but a lot of good stuff.

Ano Natsu de Matteru: This isn't Onegai Teacher 3, but it's totally Onegai Teacher 3, except that in this case the redheaded alien is just an upperclassmen and not a teacher. The art style, setting, and characters are mostly the same. That's not a bad thing though, it's a fun show, a slice of life love quadrangle comedy with a lot of heart and fun characters. My favorite is Lemon (ufufufu).The premise is basic enough, boy is killed by girl's falling spaceship. Girl saves boy's life. Boy later meets up with girl and offers her a place to stay since she seems to be homeless. Boy and girl live alone together while his sister is away on business. Boy's childhood friend is not amused. Hilarity ensues. Not quite as good as Ano Hana, but definitely worth a shot for people that enjoy this style of show.

Bodacious (Mouretsu) Space Pirates:This one's pretty good, not sure if it'll be great yet though because it's a slow burn. The concept is pretty simple, in a far future space colony, a young girl inherits her father's pirate ship and embarks on a life of piracy. It hasn't even quite gotten that far yet though, but it's establishing some solid characters with personality, and a really well developed sci-fi setting (although it does have some shady zero-g physics). It could build to something great, but no way to know yet.

Senki Zessho Symphogear: This is sort of one of those "magical girl, but not exactly aimed at tween girls" shows, the target audience is more in line with Sacred Seven or Gao Gai Gar or something. It involves big combat sequences featuring two girls wearing powered armor, and is kinda cute but not in a too kiddy way. I definitely want to see where this one ends up.

Brave 10:I have mixed feelings on this one. On the one hand, it's a slick ninja period series, on the other it's a little light weight and the comedy falls a bit flat. Probably worth checking out for Naruto fans.

Another: Not for me, this one is a slow horror-based series that seems to involve ghosts. I watched the first ep and read a bit about the second, it doesn't seem up my alley.

Of the returning fall shows, Persona 4 is definitely my favorite currently running show, with a really fun cast of characters and sense of humor. The most recent "trip to Tokyo" episode was hilarious, and even the episodes that seem like filler because they don't really advance the plot are fun to watch. Guilty Crown also continues to be pretty solid, with fun action sequences, although the reactions that many of the characters have to events just do not come off as natural, for example when

Shun publicly destroys a mobile suit with his bare hands, this does not cause any noticeable change to his public perception until considerably later in the show, what?

Tried a couple of episodes of "Spice and Wolf." It's pretty "meh." Unless you're really really into half-animal people and medieval currency speculation.


For some reason I'm tempted to go back and watch "Serial Experiments Lain." Because I'm weird like that.

I managed my way through Spice and Wolf, but yeah it's pretty boring.

Has anyone seen Redline yet? I loved it. Top notch animation. Really fun.

I watched the first episode of the Black Rock Shooter TV anime. Blegh. It suffers from the same problems that the OVA had, namely that the action-oriented BRS segments are beautiful, high energy, and overall fun, but then for no apparent reason they saddle them with some ridiculous middle school drama queens, getting all weepy and trembly and blushy at the drop of a hat. It just makes no damned sense, each episode is like taking five minutes of a blockbuster action movie and sandwiching it into the middle of twenty minutes of Gossip Girl or something. So disappointing.

On another note, I'm pretty much enjoying Bodacious (Mouretsu) Space Pirates. It's just fun. It turns out that in this timeframe, pirates are far from the scourge of the "high seas", they're more of an entertainment. They hijack ships without causing any serious damage, and without the "victims" putting up much of a fight, and its all insured so everyone just sort of views it as an experience to tell all their friends. I'm sure that at some point this relationship will be turned entirely on its head, of course.

Symphogear got pretty dark in there. It's pretty bloody for a show that's an offshoot of the magical girl genre.

Managed to find a copy of the first "Patlabor" series, which was something I'd been meaning to find for awhile. I'd seen the first two movies, along with Oshii's "Ghost in the Shell" movies, and really enjoyed them, so I thought I'd check out the TV series.

I really liked it. It sure had a few... strange moments (see: the sea monster), but overall I enjoyed it. Much better character work than a lot of anime shows, especially of the "big robot" variety, and with a surprising range of emotions: some episodes are almost all slapstick, only to be followed by two episodes of intense political thriller. Which is kind of surprising if all you've seen from Mamoru Oshii are the "Ghost" movies, because those aren't exactly laugh riots.

I've been watching Nichijou over the last few weeks, it's a school comedy with a few fantastic elements (a robot with a giant screw key in her back created by a 9-year old), but the main comedy comes from how seriously the characters take everything. It's also amazingly animated.

I'd heard about "Azumanga Daioh," but somehow didn't know it was created by the guy who made "Yotsuba." And seeing as "Yotsuba" fills me with childish glee and happiness*, I will now be watching it.

I've been watching Nichijou over the last few weeks, it's a school comedy with a few fantastic elements (a robot with a giant screw key in her back created by a 9-year old), but the main comedy comes from how seriously the characters take everything. It's also amazingly animated.

Nichijou is one of the funniest series I've ever seen. It's like Azumanga, but crazier.

Yeah, I assumed so. Still, it's a great little series, full of heart and warmth.

I'm still waiting to get into Persona 4. Perhaps after I play the game.

I do really want to play the game now, but not nearly enough to get a Vita for it. I am curious how closely it follows the plot, but it kind of seems like most of the show dances around what the core plot of the game would be, fleshing out the downtime. It's far more a slice of life comedy than it is an action series.

So I've watched a few episodes of "Azumanga Daioh," and it's fun. Some of the humor doesn't exactly translate, but that's to be expected; there were a few scenes that I'm guessing were supposed have jokes but I was missing the references necessary to understand the humor. Still, it's pretty charming and fun...


... but that gag with the male teacher is really, really creeping me the f*^k out.






I also watched the first two episodes of "Gunbuster." Eh. Despite a few good moments, I wasn't that impressed.

Gunbuster's first two episodes are markedly different in tone from the rest of the series. I'd strongly recommend continuing.

Finished Azumanga Daioh. I really liked it. I find a lot of anime's attempts to be cutsie and adorable alternately obnoxious, diabetes-inducingly saccharine, or creepily sexualized (and sometimes all of these things at once), but this show actually managed to be cute and sweet AND entertaining... even with the running joke that one of the teacher's is probably a pedophile (because nothing is funnier than the implied threat of child rape!).


Finally going to finish "Gunbuster." I did enjoy episodes 3 and 4 more than I did 1 and 2, but I still wasn't overly impressed by it. Still watching, though, so it must be doing something right.
