Frank Skinner and Frankie Boyle return as guests tonight. Germaine Greer's also on the panel.

Wrong thread Chris. This isn't the What Are You Watching thread.

damn, the American Deal or No Deal shows Bush!

(cheap joke, I know, but quite probably the least offensive thing I could say about it)

"spank that banker for me" really does sound like a line from a dodgy adult film though

Didn't think the show was as good this week, probably due to the rather dull program choices.

Best moment by far was Charlie asking Frank Skinner which celebrity he'd go on a date with. :D

I quite liked last night's look at 90s TV and it actually raised some interesting discussion points (as well as being funny). Really hope the show gets a second series (anyone heard if that might happen? It didn't get pushed around the schedule, which is certainly encouraging).

Oh and am I alone in thinking that Victoria Coren is actually amazingly attractive despite/due to being a bit of a bitch?
EDIT: Actually I just googled Coren to find out who she is (she looked vaugely familiar, from tough as nails quiz show Only Connect as it turns out) and apparently on top of being a vague journalist/broadcaster type, she's also a professional poker player and co-wrote a book about trying to make the best porn film ever, after being a reviewer for Erotic Review.

"Once More, With Feeling"

I must read that at some point - bought a cheap copy last summer and haven't touched it.

"Being a bit of a bitch?" Not sure about that, but she's extremely easy on the eye.

I hope the show gets a second series, but the format needs tightening up a bit. It's not really a game-show, and I've occasionally wondered why the guests are there, as they don't get to talk half as much as Charlie Brooker. It's fine for people like Frankie Boyle, who's used to competing with other people on the panel to get a word in edgeways, and also his sensibilities are very similar to Brooker's.

Often though, the guests seem a little lost when they're not competing for points..

They really need to decide if they're making an irreverent discussion programme about TV or a 'proper' quiz show (and if they go the latter they'd be better off with two competing teams a la Have I Got News For You).

They also need a more consistent standard of guest.

Well, maybe 'bitch' is too harsh. Stern certainly when she's railing at Brooker about the uselessness of people's talents on You Bet.

Totally. Keep the audience, drop the quiz. There was some stuff last night I would loved to have been explored more

I don't think they were that bad, a couple of dodgy ones at the start but by the end most of the guests contributed at least something IMO.

The trouble with that is that it then just becomes a slight variation on Screenwipe. And if you make it a proper quiz with teams etc you'd lose half of the interesting elements and it'd become like 9 out of 10 cats.

I love the half-assed nature of the quiz.

I like the current format too. I don't mind that the scoring system is borderline Shooting Stars. The quiz aspect is pretty slight but it does give the show something of a spine. It would probably end up being a bit of a mess otherwise.

Not so much. Cutting down the gameshow bit would become a discussion show but one where guests don't have to reply with some gag in order to look useful.
I'm not saying they go on the voyage up their own backsides like Late Review, but I'd like to hear what the panel thinks in something larger than stabs and bites.. There's also been a strong presence of 3rd guest this series, or the useless one because they aren't regulars on the "Have I Mock the 8 out of 10 Buzzcocks To You" circuit.
I also think not having everyone 3 miles from each other would help interaction too.

I'd also like it to take more risks. Charlie raising You Bet as an example of honorable television was refreshing. And seeing that Ring My Bell was a good idea appallingly executed helps raise things above the usual slag fest.
But can also go for the too lazy gags. Bouncer's dream? Yes, we all know about bouncers dream. It been a retro-staple of comedy routines for nearly 20years now. Calling Danny Baker a cock? Why? Just for the sake of a gag. It's as bad as just swearing to get applause.

Honestly, I didn't know/remember Bouncer's dream.

Interesting comments about the "quiz" nature of the program. After years of watching "QI," I just assumed that "the points don't really matter" was a traditional part of the British quiz-show format.
