When the White Stripes broke big about a decade ago, I dismissed them without much thought. Simplistic songs, a limited guitarist, and a drummer who couldn't keep time.

But I've just read a retrospective article on their albums and the reviewer made Jack White out to some kind of musical genius.

Well, as you know, I'm always ready to try the latest hip things because I'm so down with the kids, so maybe I need to re-evaluate their music.

This gave me the idea for a Thought Provoking Thread ™ ™ (because Al-x is busy these days).

Somebody out there must like the White Stripes. Your challenge is to convince me, in one song why I should listen to them. One song is all you get. Post a link to it here, and I promise to give it a fair hearing -- but I'm not that bothered, so I'll only listen to the first song posted. Pick your best shot carefully. (You may explain your reasons if you wish to be especially thought provoking.)

The person to post the response gets to issue their own challenge for somebody else to convince them in one song why they should listen to a particular band. And so on, in a thought provoking chain :)

I have a strong feeling that you're not going to like the White Stripes no matter what song is posted.

But it's a great idea for a thread.

I'm not a huge fan of the White Stripes unfortunately (while I do like them well enough), so I'm the wrong person to pick up the glove.

I'm not a huge fan of the White Stripes, but Fell in Love With a Girl is pretty good.

The rules, Lorcan! The rules! If this is supposed to be the White Stripes song for David, you have to give a link and maybe explain why that's a great song!

If you don't like this song then ask Santa to give you a new heart for Christmas. Yes it's simplistic, yes it's limited, but damn it's beautiful.

You're all doing this wrong. There was supposed to be only one White Stripes answer. Then, David listen and says what he thinks of it. Then, someone else challenges someone to find a song from a different band that they don't quite like.

I loved White Blood Cells and Elephant, but haven't really listened to them in years. They were one of my favourite bands when I was in school though.

Thank you, Christian. I can see that you understand the importance of keeping to the rules of thought provoking threads.

I am not sure what to do now though.

It is making me wonder...

The White Stripes single I would choose to bring David in would be this one:

I prefer Jolene or 7 Nation Army or Conquest or Hardest Button to Button, but this isn't about me.

Good choice, Russell. Very cool video, too.

i like two white stripes songs (so jim, guess that means i need a new heart for christmas): icky thump, which is totally badass, and conquest. sorry david, you just need to find a hardcore fan that can attest to the band's virtues.

i usually have no interest in convincing anyone of anything (wait, i can't decide if that's actually true or not) but it is interesting to hear why someone likes a particular band, song, book, etc, even if you feel the opposite way.

Stop, stop, too many songs Posted Image

I'm going to follow my own rules and listen only to the one Jim posted. So if he picked a bad one you can all blame him.

Ok, proper speakers plugged in....

Ok...........

Well, I didn't hate it :)

It's actually quite pleasant. Nice tune, cute words.

But I don't feel the need to listen to it again. Pleasant, yes, but not compelling. Just ordinary. And therefore I'm not inspired to go and listen to more of their music. Nothing in that song convinced me they can write or perform *great* songs.

If it's not your thing, then it's not your thing. Listening to one song isn't going to change your mind

It might. Every band I love started with me hearing one song...

And a surprising range of things are my thing.

As you chose it specifically with me in mind I will break my own rules ;)

Ok, yes, that was pretty good. It was like a proper rock song.

No can do. It all sounds like band practice.
