This has been bothering me for years now, and Google searches have proven useless, as my recollection of the anime are so vague. So, back in the mid/late 90s I remember a naval based anime where a large ring(s?) appear in the sky over the sea. The rings either teleported an alien invasion force or led to a different dimension. I seem to remember either an aircraft carrier or a destroyer being the hero’s ship. Also pretty sure it consisted of two VHS cassettes, each about an hour and half or so in length.
I know this isn’t a lot of info to go on, but I also know there are folks who are much, much more knowledgeable in these thing than me around these parts.
So, does anyone have any idea what I’m talking about?

Lorcan did a similar trick once when I was trying to think of the manga 2001 Nights, but only had a vague description of it.
