Listening to a Whitesnake bootleg from 2003 (Glasgow, 22/05). Coverdale's voice is a shadow of what it was. So sad :(

Plus Doug Aldrich is possibly the worst guitar player in rock and roll.

I take it back. Stephanie has reminded me that no matter how bad somebody is, there's still Slipknot.

I listened to Aphex Twin's Selected Ambient Works Volume II over the last few hours. Awesome, but now I'm in the mood for something... earthier:

Terrible, terrible news... Deep Purple's Jon Lord dies aged 71:

Jon Lord of Deep Purple has died at the age of 71.

The co-founder and keyboard player with the metal pioneers passed away today (July 16) after suffering a pulmonary embolism. He had been suffering from pancreatic cancer and was surrounded by his family at the London Clinic.

So very, very sad. A musical genius has left us... Posted Image

Jon Lord introduced me to to rock music. Years later, he re-introduced me to classical music. He taught me that music isn't something you have to put into labelled boxes, music is just music and you're allowed to love all of it. Over his long career he played rock, he played classical, he played jazz and blues and folk and even the odd pop hit, and when you find all those different types of music mixed randomly on my shelves today then it's probably due in large part to Jon Lord.

I have over 60 CDs of his music. I have seen him 29 times in concert. 12 years ago I flew to Sweden (the first time I had ever left the country), because it was the only opportunity I would have to see him play that year. Tonight I am exchanging messages with friends around the world, with people I know because we have travelled together following his music. I don't think I'm exaggerating if I say Jon Lord's music changed my life.

And when I have been lucky enough to speak to him, he has been the kindest, most gracious "star" I have ever known. Nobody else has ever written to me just to say "thank you for the kind review".

His sound was as unique as his musical vision.
