I saw the trailer for Great Gatsby in 3-D before Amazing Spider-Man, and was totally blown away. It looked incredible. And I'm not at all a fan of 3-D, but I'm really excited for that one.

I know it's just the bald tough guy in steam punk etc. but the first thing that sprung to mind was '12 Monkeys'.

Although Australia was one of the most dreadful films I have ever seen I do have to give it to Luhrmann that he still managed to make it look good. The kind of film that would work better with the sound down. If anyone can do a period drama in 3D and make it work it's probably him and as it's an adaptation of a classic the story should be okay.

Yeah, the trailer got quite a mixed response, but I thought it looked great. Although that may be because I'm not very familiar with the novel. I'm approaching the film more as a Luhrmann fan.

I've read the novel at least three times and thought the trailer looked really compelling. In my mind's eye, the book is vivacious and deserves a movie that is full of life as well. It doesn't deserve the staid, stuffy kind of award-bait that these period adaptations usually get.

That is the opposite of how I interpret the book. Seems to me like Gatsby's parties are supposed to be actually pretty depressing.

The prose isn't, though.

Nope, but it doesn't describe a Moulin Rouge-esque spectacular. It describes a melancholic world.

I think we're describing two different things but we're roughly on the same page. You can be lonely and melancholy at a wild, lavish party. In fact I think it's easier to feel lonely and melancholy at a big spectacular party.

Who knows if that is how the film comes across; we'll find out in six months.

When I'm talking about how alive the movie looks I'm referring to the fact that classic literature is usually treated too respectfully in adaptation. The act of reading these books is electric, and the act of watching the adaptations is generally kinda dull.

Agreed. I think it could be a pretty powerful juxtaposition if Luhrmann and the cast can pull it off properly. Gatsby is an intensely lonely man, but his parties should be off the hook. That's how I always imagined it. In any case, it one of the movies I'm most looking forward to this year.

I haven't seen anything from him that suggests he can.

Gatsby's parties come across pretty sinister to me. One of the first things Nick describes is that it is full of "hungry" Englishmen who are there to try and leech some money out of rich Americans. Doesn't seem like a very fun crowd. Lots of people there pretending to be having fun. I picture the parties more like an expensive version of the 'party' Jesse threw at his house in Breaking Bad.

I don't know, I found that Moulin Rouge had some pretty sinister undertones (or overtones even) within all that flash. But hey, maybe the movie will fall flat on its face, I still look forward to finding out if it works or not.

I found it to be a headache with no depth. And I am a fan of musicals.

Moulin Rouge was a musical?

Huh. I had no idea.

So what it boils down to is that you aren't really a fan of Luhrmann, which is fine. But then it's not really a surprise that you'd not like the look of his Gatsby movie.
