I'm off to see this tonight. Fairly excited, but I've been resolutely avoiding clips and reviews, so I'm not entirely sure what to expect exactly. It's an adaptation of Spider-Man and his Amazing Friends tho, right? I shall be utterly disappointed if it isn't.

I've heard a lot of rumours about the voice actor for Videoman. I think they're saving Mr Frump for the sequel.

It's true, although there's no Ms Lion (Grrrr.)

No Ms Lion?! Oh man, then why are they even bothering with the film?

Someone I know said it was pretty good. So I'll find out tonight!!! I'm actually more pumped up than I thought I would be for this film.

So I'll be avoiding this thread until Saturday.
Surprisingly excited for this! In the past few weeks I've gotten to Avengers level excited.

Emma Stone stole the show, I thought. The Lizard was too generic and expressionless a bad guy.
This is probably a weird thing, but it doesn't feel like Spider-Man if J. Jonah Jameson and the Daily Bugle are nowhere to be seen (I get that PP is in high school here, but we don't even get a single mention of the paper anywhere).
Anyway, it's well crafted, and people are definitely going to love it, but for me it could have been a LOT more fun and may even be a victim of The Avengers raising the bar too high.

During the movie I kept thinking that Maguire looked a bit more like a character Romita would have drawn, and Garfield more like a character Ditko would have drawn. And that also sums up some of the differences in tone as well.

I thought it was a pretty good movie but I didn't like it. Just wasn't what I want from a Spider-Man flick. Too dour, too brooding, too dark (in terms of both the tone and the color palette) and much too long.

Huh, I disagree with pretty much everything you said. I really enjoyed it. Thought it was true to the source material and pretty much everything I wanted forgone a Spider-Man film.
Regarding JJJ, I think it was absolutely right to leave him out. The film's already got far too much to set up without jamming Jameson in there as well. There are Bugle mentions though -

Yep, basically I'm a fan and I'm looking forward to the next installment.

(Should also say for anyone going to a screening... stay through first half of the credits, there IS an extra scene...)

As someone who never really bought Maguire in the role, this was easily my favorite Spider-Man movie. Emma Stone, as always, did steal the show. But I have something of a hopeless crush on that girl. I thought Garfield embodied the way I've always imagined both Peter and Spider-Man. I have a feeling that people who really dug the Raimi movies won't be that into this one, but for those of us that never really connected to those movie should enjoy this one. I know I did. My younger sister also preferred this one to the others.

Yeah, I really dug the Raimi movies and I liked all three of them, even the third one, better than this movie.
Although the production values on these superhero movies are so high nowadays that I can't really say many of them are "bad" so much as it's different strokes and all that. Generally speaking, the level of seriousness is usually inversely proportionate to my level of enjoyment, and this one was very serious. But hard to fault the craft, for sure.
I thought Garfield did an excellent job, especially with little details here and there. Like how he used his glasses as a prop, it was a little Christopher Reeves-esque. But I can't say he's at all how I've ever pictured Peter Parker.

Yeah, it really does seem to just be a different strokes. And maybe a bit of a generational thing, meaning that I was only a casual Spider-Man fan until Ultimate Spider-Man came along and hooked me. I was never into the Lee/Ditko or Romita stories all that much, but I'm a big Ultimate Spider-Man fan, and where Tobey might have been a really great fit for the old school Spider-Man (can't really judge myself), I think Andrew Garfield was a good representation for the Ultimate side of things. Though that could just be me. I personally found the movie plenty of fun, despite being dark. Not on the same level as Avengers, but I felt some real chemistry between the leads and thought Garfield was having a good time in the role. That's something I only really felt with Maguire during the much lamented emo dance sequence (which I still think is pretty great).

I'm not sure if this has anything to do with the movie but I would say "my" Spider-Man was Roger Stern & John Romita Jr., that era. I'm not sure the Raimi movies fit with that.
Could never get into Ultimate....I feel like I've read about 12 issues of it over the years and nothing happened in a single one of them.
