Nah, I meant francophone, as french is my first language. I was born in France, grew up there for a bit, then moved to English Canada in my teenage years with my parent)

I badly phrased this statement, but again english is my second language :)

Oh, NO! Stephanie - our first bad movie date! Posted Image

I guess you'll have to pick the next one! Posted Image
(No chick flicks!)

arachnophobia then.

saw the lookout with joseph gordon-levitt, jeff daniels, matthew goode and isla fisher. so good! i went into it not really knowing what it was about and came out pleasantly surprised. it was really well done, and the cast was great, especially daniels who plays a blind guy. it's categorized as a thriller, which i guess it technically is, but the majority of the movie is about gordon-levitt and his brain injury. again, really enjoyable movie.

Ah... that makes sense. Do people ever think you are French Canadian?

I'm fairly certain I liked The Lookout, though I remember very little about it other than the actors in it.

It was pretty tightly scripted, but it was not easy to get the whole story from one viewing.

No. I managed to keep bits of my original accent whenever I speak French, although it shifted toward more of an international french accent, and in English I always get mistaken for a german or a dutch national for some odd reason. Quebeckers and French nationals have very distinct accents(hell, depending on where you are from in France, you will sound completely different...) I do not sound like Jean Dujardin whenever I speak english, although I can definitely speak like Jean Dujardin if I want to Posted Image( and I might just do that when I will be in the States, in bars :P)

I started to watch Boardwalk Empire. It's very good.

i could have sworn someone posted about watching Carnage, but i can't find it. anyway, it felt a little sadistic to take pleasure in the breakdowns of the characters in this film, especially jodie foster's character, but i did nevertheless. i think it would have been better suited for the stage, but overall, it was an unusual little film that i actually kind of liked, despite my distaste for the director.

It was a play first, right? I haven't seen Carnage, but I've generally noticed that movies based on plays usually show it. Meaning that as a viewer I'm almost always thinking that it's definitely more suited for the stage than the screen.

Just watched Kick-Ass. It's quite fun, but doesn't quite manage to capture the desperation of Dave's character in the comics. In the movie, he's a little more heroic (and gets the girl), whilst the comic kept him as a loser throughout. Also, the plot was a little too straightforward (it could have done with another twist or two - why not conceal Red Mist's identity, as in the comic?) and I felt as though the ending of the movie veered too much into fantastical superheroics rather than maintaining the grounded, real-life concept.

Still, it was an enjoyable way to kill a couple of hours. Moretz was the standout, although I liked Cage's pastiche of Adam West.

Yeah, I posted about it in the previous thread. Here's what I wrote:

I just watched Carnage - based on the play "The God of Carnage". It's a pretty simple but enjoyable movie, set in a single apartment, proceeding virtually in real-time, and based around just four characters: two sets of parents, who meet up to discuss an attack by one set's kid on the child of the other pair. Whilst the conversation starts off civil, it gradually descends into more outright antagonism, with each character's flaws being laid bare. Characters break and form alliances with one another, and as we start to get more and more insights into the parents, we start to understand that the incident between the children might be more complex than it first appeared too. Although having said that, there still isn't a huge amount of substance to the story - it's more of a character piece.

It's a short film - just 79 minutes - and to be honest it never really escapes its theatrical roots and takes full advantage of the possibilities offered by cinema. But with a good cast (Jodie Foster, John C. Reilly, Kate Winslet and Christoph Waltz) and some neat direction by Roman Polanski that keeps things interesting (he manages to find a wide variety of different angles on the apartment, so things don't get too visually repetitive), it's a reasonably enjoyable watch.

And I agree with your comments about Polanski - I find it kind of difficult to sit down and willingly watch one of his movies, but once I do I usually find I'm able to separate art and artist.

I saw the play, (God of Carnage), in Berlin and enjoyed it tremendously. Those irrational arguments the characters engage in are fantastic. I haven't seen the movie, though, as I don't feel like supporting Polanski with my money.

I enjoyed the second ep of Newsroom. It was very funny in a lot of bits, I think Munn works great in that role, and most of the characters are very likable. There were three parts at which I think it really failed hard though, 1.When Jan Brewer cancelled on them at the last minute, they should have called her on it, publicly shamed her for backing out. 2. When Maggie gets into an impassioned monologue, she can't pull it off, and 3. the entire business with the email was horrific. It was way too telegraphed, just sitcom cliche stuff that this show should be better than to draw from. They should take their own advice. It was sort of meta-ironic in that respect though.

i agree with points 2 and 3. it felt like alison pill was yelling the entire episode. if i were one of the people working with her, i would have told her to shut the hell up. or at the very least, i'd think it!

Am loving TRON: Uprising. Great voice actors (Pee Wee Herman!) and excellent art and direction. I was fearful of a totally anime look, but this kicks ass. Disney hit the ball out of the park with this show.

Newsroom, sadly, sucks. The writing is bland and the actors are too. Was looking for a good Sunday watch now that the Killing is off the air. "I had to cheat on you in order to determine I was in love with you." Thanks, mental patient that's sweet. Like a kick in the balls.

I haven't watched Newsroom yet, but I am eager to see if episode four is as bad as everyone who's seen it says it is. All I know about it is that it involves Bigfoot in some way.

Critics were sent the first four episodes. Apparently episode four is what inspired most of the terrible reviews the show got.
