Not to get too morbid about it, but Stan's not going to be with us THAT much longer. The guy is 89. Opportunities to meet him are limited and if you really wanted to do this and passed, you might regret it. He and his collaborators have given me so much that he feels like a distant relative. Plus he seems really cool and open to meeting fans, so there's no chance he'll be a standoffish prick.
Yeah, I would do it. The better question is how would I justify the expense to the wife.

There's no-one alive who inspires you enough or who's work you enjoy so much that you wouldn't shell out some money to meet them and thank them?
There's loads of folks I'd pay to meet, but $200 without any real time or a lunch or something is a bit much. I've always wanted to meet and thank Stan though. The guy is an American treasure. Would meeting Stan be similar to going to a Bulls playoff game - that's the question?
I think the only people I'd shell out $200 to meet are Obama, Biden, Mohammad Ali and Jackie Chan. Stan's up there though - if this were $100 I'd buy in a minute.
I can think of several I'd pay $200 to go back in a time machine to meet.

I not a big Stan Lee fan, but I don’t really see the point of meeting someone just for the sake of meeting them. I mean no matter how great they were, I think most great writers, artists, etc. express what makes them great by doing their job, so I’d rather spend that money on their work.

The pound's getting weaker by the day at the moment.

The thing I love about this thread is that my computer's got some sort of add-on that automatically converts mentions of foreign currency to sterling. So, whilst I know the actual sum being asked to meet Stan is US$200, the £ amount in the thread title keeps fluctuating with the exchange rate.

Does the same thing happen when people mention 50 Cent?

That's a good point. Ten years ago I wouldn't have done it. I am in a much better financial position now. I can afford to spoil myself once in a while.Which is the crux of it. $200 means food and lodging for some and a bit of an extravagence for others. It doesn't surprise me some of the older posters are saying yes, $200 for me ten years ago when I first got a house is an entirely different proposition than it is now.

...and yet, despite not having as much money Ten years ago, I'd have gone for it THEN rather than now.
I've got responsibillillities now. Sigh.
I can see the appeal, though. People pay up to that and more to see pop stars perform in Stadiums. Stan Lee can't sing or dance... so I guess Lunch and a chat is as good as it gets.

we haven't seen stan lee sing or dance. it's an important distinction. now, how many of us need to throw in $200 to test marc's hypothesis?
Rename the thread - 'How much do you think you would you have to pay Stan Lee to sing and dance for you?'

So it got me wondering - would you pay $200 to meet Stan, or is there anyone famous you'd pay that amount of money to get a picture with? Or do you think you shouldn't be paying to spend 5 seconds with a famous person - should this be something they do for nothing?
I don't think it's something they should do for nothing. No famous person should ever feel obliged to interact with their fans beyond the normal pratice of their craft: writers write, actors act, singers sing, and we pay them for it -- that is the full extent of their "contract" with their fans. If they want to charge money for their fans to interact with them, that's their right and doesn't make them any less of a person or an artist.
But I can't imagine why anybody would want to pay money for the privilege.
