I'm in contact with an artist about doing the art for a submission of mine, and they're up for doing the thing, but now they've asked me to send them a contract.

The job is totally unpaid, for me, the artist and the publisher, so I'm wondering, is there any need for me to be writing up contracts when there's no money involved?

Or has this person just ignored my numerous statements that the work is unpaid, both in my original post AND in the email where I sent the script (which I did so they could decide if they liked the story enough to work for free) and so are wasting time that could be spent getting this thing in the bag before the deadline because they're waiting for money?

I have worked unpaid on almost everything I've done up to now, and have NEVER a) asked for a contract and b) been asked to sign a contract for the work.

Ask them if they have an example of a previous contract, as you've not previously dealt with contracts for unpaid work.

There is a logic to it as there may need to be an agreement over what happens to the submission.

I would suspect it is about rights to the material. While the work is unpaid in the event one of you becomes a major success and someone wants to reprint it professionally or it becomes the next TMNT etc that is all agreed upfront.

Yeah, I considered that. They answered my question with much the same response. I was just put off because I'm not used to hearing it in reference to unpaid stuff. Now I'll be better prepared.

Thanks guys!
