Not all of Marvel's properties can have broad four quadrant appeal and Guardians definitely may be one of them.
Doctor Strange comes to mind as well. I know there's a really great Doctor Strange movie out there but one of Mark's quips about the Green Lantern movie comes to mind: how can you root for the hero when he's essentially just standing there and letting the ring do the work? Strange is pretty passive in combat also.

Guardians will get made - I wonder if it will be Marvel's first fully CG film aimed squarely at kids?
Yeah, that I could see working.

I like the idea, but would audiences really stand for a movie with Banner in which you don't get the payoff of a Hulk appearance?Well I'd like to see the influence of the alien technology the world just got its hands on... Iron Man 3 would be a good place to explore that. Oh the next Iron Man should also feature Banner, but not the Hulk... I'm guessing Banner will take Stark's offer to work at his labs, so we should see him help Tony, but as Banner, the scientist.
I'd like to see a storyline along the lines of Warren Ellis's "Ultimate Human", which had Tony test the limits of the Hulk's abilities and try to help Banner come up with a way to control/eliminate his Hulk problem. Although given the implications of the end of Avengers about Banner's level of control, that might not work so well in the movie universe.

Why will Guardians get made? I've been reading comics for thirty years and can't tell you a single thing about them.
Because it's the easiest way to set up Thanos for an Avengers sequel. I'm still not convinced it could work, but it's more likely now than it was a month ago.

I think because it's different. They know there's only so much room for superhero films so they can make a space one which may attract a slightly different audience rather than going further down the list into B level heroes.
It makes some sense, Blade has never sold any comics and did well in films, same for MiB.

EDIT: ... none of those commas are in the right place. I'll let it stand in demonstration of my idiocy.

I think what that says is people don't like bad movies.
But if we're being honest with ourselves, the odds of a Guardians of the Galaxy movie being any good....I mean, they're pretty slim, right?

I think the odds are pretty good. Marvel Studios have barely put a foot wrong so far. Iron Man 2 was a slight mis-step, but even that has it's moments.
I think Thor could have easily gone awry, but it turned out to be my favourite Marvel movie yet. And now they've successfully gotten over the hurdle of introducing the less grounded parts of the Marvel Universe, something like Guardians is an easier sell.
As long as Kevin Feige remains in charge, I think he'll do a good job of shepherding yet another potentially problematic property onto the big screen.

Agreed - IM2 was a step down from the first one but still a very solid superhero flick, and Thor had much against it (being based outside the typical sci-fi setting), but still managed to do well critically and commercially. Shame he didn't have more time in The Avengers.

I'm not convinced people particularly like the kind of swashbuckling space movie that Guardians would be. Flops like Green Lantern, John Carter, and Serenity seem to say so.
Star Wars seems to have okay.

Star Trek too. Those are long-established properties though.
That said, I hold the probably-unpopular opinion that we need a little break from superhero movies.

Try Annihilation out, it's pretty good. Granted, I only picked it up after reading the War Of Kings mini and a bit of Realm, but going back, it all sets it up very nicely, and the Guardians series was really great, after my initial "but GotG is from the future, man!" revulsion to a modern version with none of the real Guardians. I'm not as likely to think of Groot and Rocket and Starlord as I am Vance, Charlie or Yondu.I've had plenty of exposure to Hulk, Cap, Iron Man and Thor but have read naught of Marvel's galactic titles. It'll be interesting to see if I'm able to invest as much enthusiasm about a Guardians of the Galaxy movie.
Guardians Of The Galaxy isn't really a superhero film though, especially with the modern team. It's a sci-fi actioner. More akin to Star Trek or Star Wars than Spider-man. And the Star Wars audience is exactly who Marvel should aim at for this. Make it appeal to all the old people who gripe about the Prequel trilogies, whilst putting a bunch of stuff in there to hook the kids who have grown up with Jar Jar, Anakin, etc and are finding the Clone Wars cartoon not enough to satisfy their now-evolving tastes.Star Trek too. Oh, don't get me wrong, if they made a GotG movie I'd have a hop in my step. Don't know about the appeal though. I think Firefly/Serenity is a good canary in the mineshaft on that one and it was a massive failure.

A failure how? Because it didn't make money, or because it was crap?
Because if you loved it, but it didn't make money, who cares? At least you got a series and a movie that you love out of it.
