Which makes it more likely that it's a joke prop - either as a gag for someone on set or to confound snoopers.

Even if it's not, I doubt it's central to the plot - at the most perhaps it's some kind of Stark PR stunt.

Or Shane Black is unfamiliar and/or uncomfortable with CG.

It's only his second film and his first wasn't overloaded with flashy VFX.

If you go to the link you can see they've identified the actor in the suit.

James Badge Dale on set as Eric Savin

And if you look at the other images you can see he has bands on his legs much like these.

I don't think it's a joke.

Well it kinda makes sense given everything that's happened so far in the Iron Man movieverse... I would expect the gvmt. and the army to turn against Stark (and SHIELD), given how that's the way they were heading in IM2 anyways...

I'm really wishing they won't do yet another armoured villain though... or at least make it REALLY different. The Mandarin would sure rule as the next villain, to spice things up a bit.

I could have seen Rhodey switching from War Machine to Patriot since it'd be a lot more palpable to the public. 'Iron Patriot of the U.S.Army' is a better sell than the 'U.S.Army now has a War Machine.' Again, trying to trump Stark in both image and tech.

But since the actor has been defined, maybe not.

Pfft, we'll find out when the trailers come out.

Punisher could work as a character in a Captain America film, possibly. It would really have to be a "sort of team up" film though, showing the similarities and differences between the 2. With Nuke as the bad guy.

I just don't think that's a film that anyone at Disney is going to make.

I'm not sure I'd want them teamed-up exactly, but it would be interesting to see the old fashioned war vet compared to a more modern war vet like Frank Castle.

yes, not exactly teamed-up, but maybe "working the same case"

like I say, doubt it would get made though.

Do you think there'll ever be an Iron Man movie in which the main villain isn't an evil version of Iron Man?

if The Mandarin is the main villain, he's not entirely an evil version of Iron Man. The rings could use some kind of repulsor/Stark tech though, as well as the one or other that uses some kind of weird gem...that Thanos will pick up at the end.

At least we got to see him fight something else in The Avengers.

Almost all comic book characters are evil versions of the good guy. Zod, Joker, Red Skull, Doctor Doom, the list goes on. Really it's a continuation of the story - Stark has created an arms race by building the Iron Man armor, so the rest of his story is about the consequences.

Personally I'm really happy to see the Iron Patriot armor. The design started out as a joke but it's now iconic. I think someone up above got it spot on - this is a cleaned up version of the War Machine armor for the American public, and it'll go wrong somehow someway with all sorts of unforeseen consequences. I'm hoping they mention AIM in this movie, maybe with the Mandarin leading it like a Marvel version of Dr No.

Oh yeah, I get that. I'm just worried that the look of the villains is getting a bit samey - I'm not sure how many times we can enjoy seeing the Iron Man tech fall into the wrong hands and Stark have to take on a beefed-up version of his own suit.
