The Lost World of the Seventies

Michael Cockerell sheds new light on the tragi-comedy of the 1970s by focusing on some of its most controversial characters. With fresh filming and new interviews, along with a treasure trove of rare archive, the film presents the inside story of giant personalities who make today's public figures look sadly dull in comparison.

http://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/b01hy477

It's starting with Retired General Sir Walter Walker http://en.wikipedia....sh_Army_officer), a very pukka, and very senior ex-soldier who was one of many people who believed that a Communist revolution could emerge at any time. Well, any time back then.

Walker went so far as to organize volunteers to step into the breach if the red tide ever washed over the country.

Just watched the first ep of The Bridge and I have a new phrase: Negative tact! It's about the only way to rationalise Soren's craziness, how she got accepted into the cops in the first place is something of a mystery. Meanwhile her Danish partner cop is recovering from a vasectomy!

It's strange, for years it was: Here's bastard male maverick cop, paired with more caring female cop - now the roles have switched around and its the blokes who are the cuddly teddy bear characters and the women who are monomaniacs!

That said, I'm not exactly opposed to the change! :)

Charlie Brooker just posted this: http://www.youtube.c...A53AD4228E99928

All the episodes of the "Up" documentary, started in 1964 and tracing a group of real people every 7 years. This'll keep me busy.

I'm a big fan of that series and even saw the last two when they came out so I've been aging alongside them (albeit much younger of course). It's pretty fascinating, moving stuff.

I have mixed feelings. It looks gorgeous, amazing actors, but it drags so much sometimes. Marcello Mastroianni was extremely handsome in that film, which isn't something I say often about actors...

Desperate Housewives Finale...

You guys.. I'm balling!

They had a good season, ended it on a good note.. Yes, there were many times where I facepalmed at how inconsistent and sloppy the story got, but overall the story still held together and I was able to watch this season finale with a smile on my face.. I feel like I been watching this show forever and I've seen it's up's and down's in the series but stuck it through and am glad that they ended it on a good note

I caught up on my "Castle" viewing. Was somewhat disappointed that you had Adam Baldwin and Nathan Fillion together for an entire ep but no "Firefly" gags or any pranks at all.

They covered that years ago.

Put me down for someone else who really dug Black Mirror, in particular the third epsiode.

I think that was one of my favourite episodes ever. So many great moments. Posted Image

Yeah, I loved the homage in it too.

My fave of the season is last weeks Law & Order episode, they got the acting and captured the beats of the show so well. It;s annoying that this could be it for the show.

The Parallax View

Great movie. I really dig Alan J Pakula's 1970s conspiracy films. Parallax View along with Klute and All The Presidents Men are worth checking out - he's quite an overlooked director but I can understand the criticism that some people now would find his work slower paced.

It is fascinating, although it suffers a bit from watching them in a row because it repeats a lot of clips from the previous shows. Which is only natural as every episode airs 7 years apart and not intended to be viewed as a playlist in Youtube. It does make you reflect a bit at your own life journey.

Just by coincidence I was listening to the radio the other day and comedian Frank Skinner said he was in Tony the taxi driver's cab. He insisted on playing Skinner's novelty football record "3 Lions' at ear splitting volume so everyone started at them.

Glad to hear me and Christian aren't the only ones watching this show.

Loved the finale, thought I totally called the moment with Karen in the courtroom the moment she turned up.

Not many shows can sync up a birth, a death and a wedding and make it work.

Most of the episode, yet the whole season, was predictable but that didn't stop me from enjoying it any less. It took me almost four hours to watch the episode due to a sloppy internet connection but was sooo worth.. I think they played everything better then I was expecting.. Karen's death had me in tears!

Ha, I totally just watched Quarantine (the American version of REC) totally thinking it was part of The Walking Dead double bill to celebrate series to starting. It was a double bill tonight on Channel 5 right?
I thought it was a really great off tangent episode Posted Image Woops. And The Walking Dead was good but I think reading the comic has ruined the comic for because of all the changes they've made. Still love the show but ignorance is bliss right?

Just saw "Source Code" and loved it. I wish I could find the thread on here for that movie specifically, as I remember reading it and it had some really good posts, but apparently I can't search for the term "code" under the search window, and I'm not about to search every thread with the word "source" in it. Can someone help me out?

Sorry, but SOURCE CODE was never made in my parallel reality so I can't discuss it. Instead, Duncan Jones directed WOLVERINE 2. Ironically, it was based on DAYS OF FUTURE PAST with Logan remembering 8 minutes of the future every time he went to sleep, but as the story progressed, each time something about the future changed because of what he did in the present.

I actually really enjoyed Quarantine and it's one of the few Found Footage movies I actually like. I've never seen REC but hated REC2 so I've never felt the need to go check it out either.

A lot of what's enjoyable about Rec2 is linked to the assumption that you've seen the first one, so I can understand why you might not like it on its own.

I really enjoyed it though - the twist involving the night vision filter (and what it reveals) is brilliantly simple. And the ending is fantastic. Sadly, it looks as though the third movie is going to be a bit of a departure from the first two - although I guess there's only so much drama you can wring out of that situation and location.

Yeah, "The Entire History of You" (written by Peep Show's Jesse Armstrong) of was my favourite too. Much smaller scale than the other two, but but very affecting.

I liked all of the Black Mirrors, for different reasons. The second one, 15 Million Merits, was a great satirical/disturbing/thought-provoking tale, even if some of the points it was making were a little on-the-nose.

I really liked REC. Haven't seen REC 2 - is it a direct continuation of the first movie?
