Also, I'm just happy to see a movie with Joss Whedon's name attached doing monster business for once.
My thoughts exactly. I'm happy it's working out for Whedon for once.

Whedon is going to be fighting the job offers off with a sh**ty stick after this.

Although Nathan Fillion would have to seriously lose weight for that
I'm not being really serious, I think Firefly is over and done with, sad as that is, and I'll happily follow any project Whedon chooses.
I do hope he'll keep writing and directing, though, and I'd be very happy if he does another TV series at some point.

It's just great fun, the audience absolutely loved it, best reaction I've seen in memory. My wife saw it (and yes she did get the Stan Lee cameo right) and asked me if I could put on Captain America on DVD the next day as she wanted more. I've had that DVD for months and she showed no interest before.
First reports on box office have come in, it's killing it.

To give some context Iron Man 2, Marvel's biggest international hit so far, made $311m outside North America, this has $178m in 3 days and hasn't opened in China, Russia and Japan yet.
Disney's biggest 3 day opening in the UK means better than Toy Story 3 which means barring any shocks Marvel will have a $1bn movie on their books.
Awesome... Now let's hope they use all those millions to fund Guardians of the Galaxy
I soooo want to see Rocket Rackoon, Groot, Starlord & co. on the Big screen... Plus the humour that has been established in the Marvel Movies would be pitch-perfect for it...
Beyonf that, I'm gonna see The Avengers soon... I still haven't decided wether to go for the 3D or the 2D version...
Last friday I went to see my very first 3D movie (the Pina Bausch movie) which, according to a friend, is one of the best 3D movies he's seen... And I enjoyed it, but wasn't all that amazed by it... So I don't know if it's worth shelling the extra cash...

I haven't seen Pina in 3D, but I imagine it and The Avengers would be very different experiences.

lol yeah... I guess they are
But in regards to the 3D I think I'll be able to at least compare those two VERY different movies =P
Gotta say, I got a shitty sit at the very far side of the cinema for the Pina movie, so the 3D looked kind of weird at times... I guess you need to sit dead center for the 3D to look best... So maybe I'll go later the week or next, 'cause right now I think it's impossible to get a good seat... 16 million opening day in Mexico city... yeah that's huge... (considering that there's a gigantic piracy black market in this country)
And every comment I've heard from anyone (most of which aren't superhero/comics fans) is *very* positive... specially from women... So that's always a good sign

It is nice, isn't it?
It's interesting to realize that while he seems like such an obvious choice from the geek cred perspective, from a practical perspective it gets much more iffy: not only has he never directed anything anywhere near this big and complicated (and expensive), but his only other movie was a flop, as were his last two television shows. While the loudness of his fanbase creates the illusion that he has some massive legion of people waiting to send everything he does into the stratosphere of success, every time he puts out one of his own properties the perpetually lackluster numbers show that his fanbases presence is made up almost entirely by their volume and not their numbers. Even his successful projects, "Buffy" and "Angel," were only really successful when measured by the lower standard of what the WB network considered a well-rated show; they never would have lasted as long as they did if they'd been on one of the big networks at the time.
In other words, it's nice to see that he will have something more substantial as leverage; I'd imagine that "how many billion dollar movies have YOU directed, Mr Producer" is a much more convincing argument than "well people on the internet LOVE ME... but don't actually seem to buy enough for anyone to make their money back."

edit: Serenity was Universal, wasn't it? Meh, same applies.

I'm another person who is very happy for Whedon that the mainstream is finally getting an idea of how gorram awesome he is.
Let's not kid ourselves here though: the hard part for him is still to come. He has to now capitalize on this success with his future non-Avengers work, and have those projects be fairly successful. Because at the end of the day, the Avengers success isn't due to people suddenly realizing how wonderful "Firefly" was and running off to see Firefly-guy's new bigscreen movie.
If I was Fox I'd be sticking some nice big "From the creators of The Avengers" stickers on a bunch of ..., Angel and Buffy DVDs/Blu-Rays and getting stores to offer some damn special deals on those box-sets.
edit: Serenity was Universal, wasn't it? Meh, same applies.
I also think that Warner Bros might be a little angry if Fox employees break into their warehouse and start plastering stickers on their inventory

I'd love to see how many people bought them this week, in the run up to the release - I've bought Cap, Thor and Iron Man 2 in the last week, and I suspect I'm not alone.
Yeah, same here, I bought Hulk and Iron Man 2 (the first I've now watched, the second I still have to).
There's a short clip at the end of this profile of Whedon of his upcoming Much Ado About Nothing film
That's another one I'm very much looking forward to. I love the play, and Brannagh's film version, and it'll be interesting to see what Whedon does with Shakespeare. It's good timing, too, Much Ado has been on our curriculum since last year so I'll get to use the film teaching it

There should be.I'd be incredibly surprised if there isn't a box set of Iron Man/Incredible Hulk/Iron Man 2/Thor/Captain America/Avengers out just in time for Christmas.
But maybe they'll hire the
