I can't believe we didn't have this thread yet (unless we do and it drifted off the first page, in which case I can't believe I didn't check for that)!

In what I THINK is an annual tradition, Millarworld guesses the top highest-grossing films of the year! The winner receives the greatest prize of all--the simmering, thinly-veiled disdain of his or her peers expressed through sarcastic congratulations and backhanded comments.

Also, Jake will kiss you on the mouth. But no tongue. Okay, okay, tongue.

Here are my top ten...if I have time later I'll add thoughts about some of them but who knows! I may not have time. I'm a busy guy cut me some slack you aren't my real dad anyway

1. The Dark Knight Rises - $475 million
2. The Hunger Games - $360 million
3. The Avengers - $325 million
4. The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey - $295 million
5. Twilight: Thank God It's Over - $275 million
6. The Amazing Spider-Man
7. Brave
8. Men in Black III
9. Prometheus
10. Battleship

My numbers for 6-10 were ridiculously arbitrary so I just didn't use any. Seriously, I was pulling numbers out of a hat at that point.

And I'm not 100% sold on this...I think Twilight will probably beat out Avengers...but it's my wishful thinking coming through......

Twilight will do around $300m domestic, they have a set fanbase and that's what the last two parts made. While Harry Potter had a spike with the last one I think that was mainly down to the 3D.

The Iron Man films did around $315m so I think Avengers should take them.

I think Dark Shadows will be the dark horse in the race. I'm pretty sure it'll make more than Snow White And The Huntsman and maybe even Prometheus since there is a fair to middlin' chance the Scott movie will disappoint.

Hmm, good fun thread.

1. Dark Knight Rises.
The buzz is there and, although its not the hot topic that 'Dark Knight' was, its something that people will see in droves. I have a feeling it will be good and that repeat business will put this in the top slot as a result.

After that we're getting into the sort of debate that film critics and award organizations like to indulge in. For example, 'The Hobbit' doesn't open until Xmas so some will choose to think of it as a 2013 film. It'll make a mint whenever it comes out.

3. 'Twilight, Breaking Dawn'
The fanbase will be there. No doubt about that.

4. The Avengers
Its got momentum and apparently its good.

5. Spider-man
I'm not amazingly interested in the amazing Spider-man but the audience showed up for the Raimi movies, I can't see them missing the reboot.

After that its the also rans that will do fine, but deliver very similar returns.

'Battleship' is making people happy, 'MIB 3' should open fine thanks to Will Smith, 'GI Joe 2' looks funny and lets not forget 'James Bond will return in "Skyfall"'.

Long shots include the non-Damon 'Bourne Legacy' and 'The Great Gatsby'.

I'm luke warm about 'Dark Shadows' but the trailer was quite we received. 'Snow White' looks better but I don't know many people who are over-enthused about it.

'Prometheus' feels like a movie for geeks, and I agree it'll probably be weak as a story, so I'm not putting my money on it. I would love to be surprised by its quality and its great success though.

I thought about Skyfall, but the last two Bond movies only did around $167million in the US, and this would appear to be the $200million club at the very least.

That said, I can't think why Snow White and the Huntsman is such a popular choice - is it just because of the Kristen Stewart factor?

The Avengers - $425 million. I think Avengers is going to be bigger than Spidey was - it seems the movie is pretty much what they need it to be, and really it's one of the biggest blockbusters ever. Plus it benefits from an early May release. And it should get multiple viewings.
The Hobbit - $410 million. This benefits from avoiding the summer scrum and so it should pretty much dominate. Count in the built up fan base and the production being pretty much the same as before, along with a more kiddy friendly story and I think this is gold.
Dark Knight Rises - $400 million. Without Ledgers performance I don't think there's going to be the same level of interest. So I can't see it doing the same as Dark Knight, and with that I think Hobbit and Avengers will beat it. Plus I don't see it being as good a movie as TDK.
Hunger Games - $380 million. Seems to be where it'll settle. I don't see it losing the #1 spot next week, but Pirates should beat it on the 27th.
Twilight - $300 million. I think Hunger Games has kinda stolen its thunder, but like Harry Potter it should be consistent.
Spider-Man - $275 million. I think this will disappoint a little. I'm not sure if people really want another Spidey movie so soon (a reboot no less), and compared to Avengers it looks dull and pedestrian. Marvel really know how to make their movies go up to 11, and comparing this to Avengers will prove they know their stuff. I'm hoping there's deals soon to sell the characters back to Marvel, or at least partner with them.

Should be a big year for movies with so many $250mil+ movies.

I think Dark Shadows & Battleship will both kind of flop, making less than $100mil.

I forgot 'Hunger Games', for various sleep deprived reasons, despite the fact that I've seen it, and liked it, and its already a big hit with more that $330m at the US box office to its name.

Oh to own a piece of Lionsgate right now.

A tough year to call with quite a few major blockbusters due out but I'll say:

1) The Dark Knight Rises - $420 million (a tough call, lots of buzz is there, but I'm completely uncertain how the lack of Ledger will play out. Could go much higher than this, but I doubt it'll do much lower. I'd say $400 million is almost guaranteed)
2) The Avengers - $380 million (another tough call, plenty of buzz, but it'll depend on how good the movie actually is if people will go in droves. Could easily end up around $315 like the Iron Man movies)
3) The Hobbit - $375 million (Hard for me to gauge because I'm no LotR fan, but this seems about what the other movies made. No clue if it's in 3D, and the less crowded holiday release could push it higher)
4) The Hunger Games - $370 million (this is basically as low as it's going to finish. Very impressive number.)
5) Amazing Spider-Man - $300 million (I'm kind of expecting the Spider-Man brand to push this to the $300 million mark. Buzz doesn't seem all that big right now, and it's definitely on the bottom of the hype list for comic movies. Still all the other Spider-Man movies managed at least $330 million domestic, I think.)
6) Breaking Dawn - $290 million (this is smack dab in between the performance of the last 2 movies, apparently.)
7) Brave - $250 million (Have to throw a family movie in there, and Brave is the only one I know of. Pixar is always reliable, so it should do well)
8) Prometheus - $225 million (it looks cool so I hope it does well. I might have gone higher with this, but this far down the list I can't even pretend my numbers make sense)
9) Men in Black 3
10) Dark Shadows (these last two movies I threw on here because they were the only other movies I could think of. No idea how they'll perform)

I really have no idea why I chose the amounts I did, for the most part. Just kind of throwing numbers up in the air. And most likely I won't be even close to right on any of these things. I'm also not sure what might get boosts from 3D as I've no idea which movies are being released in 3D. And there's also usually one or two surprise hits.

At any rate, this could be a monster year at the box office.

I don't think Brave will do insane money because of the female protagonist. I wouldn't be surprised if it fell out of the top ten entirely.

I'd put it on my list - it's the movie I want to see most this year. But I doubt it'll do much different from Kick Ass - it mightn't even do that much. I don't think it will flop like Priest did.
