The story happened months ago. At CU (University of Colorado) Boulder dormitory, a guy took video of another male student having a sexual encounter with another guy. Then he posted it on Facebook and made a lot of noise about it on campus. The student who was filmed jumped off a building and killed himself/

This is horrible enough, but then the trial happened. The judge found it was not a hate crime, as "hate" has not proven. Total sentence, 30 days in jail and some community service.

I hate bullies, whether they beat people or "just" psychologically torture them. Enough of this! The dichotomy is that someone cognizant enough to realize the pain and anguish of such bullying actions also realizes the mind-set of the bully. Such persons would not take appropriate actions against such a bully, and would rather send them to therapy or anti-hate classes or some such. Me,I'd rather take the perpetrator for a nice drag behind a pickup truck and hang them on a barbed-wire fence. But, no. I, too, see the problems on both sides. Even so, after so many years, I cannot escape the feeling that children that torture small animals or those that bully others (especially to the point of self-harm) need to be culled from the herd. It's one of the things I find almost impossible to forgive. (The unforgiveable sin, to me, is the uneducated killing anyone who is educated, as has happened and is happening in areas of Africa, and has happened throughout history. That is cause for an extinction event on those who ideate such or participate in such.)

Something has to be done. So far, I have not heard a valid working solution. Thoughts?

In case you're in need of one more reason to avoid snorting bath salts (a.k.a. synthetic cocaine), consider the tale of 19-year-old Mark Thompson.

On Monday Thompson was found in his rural West Virginia home dressed in a bra and panties. Next to him was a pornographic magazine and his neighbor's dead goat.

Thompson told police he'd been high on bath salts for three days when he stole the farm animal.

From Monday's Charleston (W. Virginia) Gazette:

"He told them, 'Don't come in, I'm naked,'" Powers said. "But they opened the door and he was standing there with his pants down. He had on women's clothing and the goat was dead and there was blood everywhere. It was just a scene." ...

When police entered the house they found fresh blood near the front door of the bedroom and in Thompson's bedroom to the right of the front door. Inside the bedroom police found the small gray and white goat wearing a pink collar lying dead on the floor, blood coming from its neck, according to the complaint. There was a pornographic magazine photo laying a few feet from the goat, the complaint states.

"We know the animal had at least one stab wound," said Cpl. Sean Snuffer, a detective with the Sheriff's Department. "They are also searching for signs of sexual trauma."

Here in Missouri, the state legislature is poised to pass a law this year that would ban the sale and possession of bath salts.

That mugshot says it all. These 'bath salts' make crack cocaine sound as harmful as a fruit salad.

But seriously, people are that way. I'm afraid bullying is unavoidable, the best one can do is curb the excesses. Punish the worst offenders, teach the victims to defend themselves or extricate themselves from the perpetrator. I believe that most of us have sadistic impulses, which are acted upon on circumstances. Do you think your proposed bloody revenge will mend this, or is it to satisfy a desire for justice?

Arjan, it is totally a personal revenge fantasy. Professionally, I know one has to identify and then work for years with an animal abuser. Bullies are not so pathological, and often have their own issues with being abused themselves. Some are just plain ignorant.

But look at the associated story here about the goat-raper-killer. Where does that start? How are such actions generated? There are vague guidelines, but each individual will no doubt have intricate past history to lead to such a point.

"Bath salts." Is this a street name? Surely these are not some sort of commercial bath products being abused? Fake blow with bad results I understand, but if they're snorting bath beads or whatever, that's just screwed. (I'll look it up, but do please fill me in.)

Some people just get crazy, for whatever reason. I don't know what makes people that way, I doubt anyone really knows. I guess it could be a combination of trauma and genetic disposition...

A few years ago there was a dude here in my neighborhood in this city who killed his lover, cut him into bitesize pieces, and stir-fried him in a wok to rid him of perceived "evil spirits". The wok and the fact that the killer was of Chinese origin made it somewhat hilarious in a South Park way, he was dubbed the wok killer.

It hardly made the press, in fact I did not find out about it from the news at the time, but years later from people who knew the family of the victim. I think there might be some journalistic agreement not to report the hell out of these psycho killers like happens in some other countries. Maybe now in the age of twitter it would have gotten way more attention. But crazy murders, they just happen, although they're probably very rare. Many more people get killed in more mundane ways, like a drunk driving accident, or a pub fight with included knives...

They're still fuel for CSI, CSI: Miami, CSI: New York, CSI: Winnebago Georgia; Homicide; Criminal Minds; CSI: Special Victims Unit; CSI: The Flat Next Door; Mentalists, Chronic Rememberers,Ghost Whispering and so on ad infinitum.

Personally, I think if I ever got psychotic enough to commit a viiolent act there would be such an element of rage that there would also be an element of psychotic absurdity involved. I'd be more likely to turn somebody into Mongolian Bar-B-Q rather than just go stab somebody or whatever. But that's just me. (If I could become psychotic, I would have done so a long, long, long time ago.) I truly do not think a single behavior, no matter how extreme and/or unusual it might be (such as the wok killer) merits a huge danger to the public. It is generally isolated and singular, and directed at one person. A pattern of behavior, however, such as animal abuse or bullying, is a huge and chronic danger to society. Bullying, especially, is self-perpetuating.

On the GOOD NEWS front:

ROSENDALE, N.Y. (AP) — Authorities say a 28-year-old man in upstate New York has been charged with driving his motorcycle at nearly 200 mph on a highway in the rain.
State police say a trooper clocked Anthony Anderson of Poughkeepsie driving at 193 mph around 8 p.m. Wednesday in the southbound lanes of Interstate 87 just south of Albany — the same stretch of road where another motorcyclist was spotted doing 166 mph earlier this month.

The trooper was able to get a description of the high-performance bike and alerted nearby patrols.

Troopers eventually stopped Anderson in the town of Rosendale. He told them he was headed to a hospital to visit a patient.

Anderson was issued 14 traffic tickets, including one for speeding.

It couldn't be immediately determined if he had a lawyer.

Lawyer? Maybe not. One HELL of a hot bike, yeah.

I do wonder about the other thirteen traffic tickets. Hope there's one for "making motorcycle cops look like sissies".
