Definitely. Note that the Doctor says

Spoiler
right before it shows up.

Oh yeah, didn't catch that the first time.

Huh. I was totally about to call Yeti on the snow scenes until the Dalek eye stalk popped up.

In the DVD commentary, Peter Davison and Janet Fielding revealed that Black Orchid is not a particular favourite episode of theirs, because they disliked the lack of a science fiction element and thought the script was generally trite.

I think the writer may have mis-heard their quote :D

The Western set-up there is very reminiscent of the Red Dwarf Western episode.

But with more money.

The same thing occurred to me, that and the fact that the villain (I'm guessing?) looks like Mean Machine. Still, a lot of scifi bad guys do.

Spurred on by our conversation about straight historicals the other day and with about 40 minutes to kill before Seinfeld came on Sky Atlantic, I watched Black Orchid last night. Dire, dire stuff on practically every level. Regarding whether the (lack of mystery) it's somewhat uncertain who the killer is for the first episode at least (though easy to work out) but there's no hint of a sci-fi explanation beyond a bit of heavy breathing.

As bad as the episode is though, the commentary is great, as Davison, Fielding, Sutton and Waterhouse tear it to pieces beautifully.

Its a bit of a cliche that she's a klutz with a gun. Her alternate history self became quite the warrior. I would've preferred to see them playing off that a bit.

I remember Black Orchid from when I was a kid and hating it. No aliens. No monsters. No robots.

Haven't seen it over twenty-five years, though. (gulp)

I know, but I'm hoping it's a setup for a "Rory is awesome with a gun!" punchline.

Until I realized it was a Dalek, I thought they were doing a riff on the trash compactor scene from Star Wars.

It's not surprising though. The levels they go to in the internet age are quite crazy, there was a story the other day about Gary Oldman crapping himself that he's misplaced a Dark Knight Rises script, scripts on coloured paper so they can't be photocopied, and even then the name Torchwood originates from an anagram used to disguise a Doctor Who item.

I don't really understand the desire to be spoiled, that reading a description of something in a blog is in any way better than seeing it unfold as intended but I kind of understand the spoilers themselves, they want to say they beat the system and knew first. The TV and film companies just want control, so they can unveil the new assistant as and when they want with the right photos and publicity and not a pic of her in The Sun coming out of Waitrose.

Another review of an old story from the new audience (an 8 year old);

The Fan Can: So, what did you make of The Mind Robber?
Lizzie: I don't like black and white. I wished it was in colour.

What you think of Patrick Troughton?
I thought he was okay. He's sometimes a teensy bit worried but he was mostly brave. That's what the Doctor is. He saves the world and people.

Did you think he was much like Matt Smith? He's Matt's favourite of the old Doctors.
I don't know. I never laughed.

Did he feel like he was the same Doctor though?
Sort of. The Doctor was old when he was young and young when he was old, wasn't he?

Did you have a favourite bit?
I liked seeing the Minotaur. I like seeing them because they're not real. I really like horses.

The Doctor is not Benjamin Button. But I would like a Brad Pitt guest-appearance (or at least Johnny Depp - suits you, sir!)

The thirteenth Doctor should be played by an eight-year old.

(That could be great, actually.)

Heh. It really could, but you'd need an exceptional eight-year-old. I don't think there is one like that in the world, really.
