I don't know if this is evidence that the studio's marketing executives are idiots or if it just tells us they just think their customers, the movie-going audience, are stupid.

Probably both.

"Listen, if we don't change the title, they are sure to think it's a sequel to this other movie none of them went to see!"

Like "Mars" was the problem with "Mars Needs Moms" - not just every other damn thing in the movie.

So, what does this mean for Stanton, really? Back to animation? Not that John Carter was very far from animation in the first place.

Well, it's not just Mars Needs Moms. John Carpenter's Ghost on Mars also bombed. So did Mission to Mars. So did Mars Attacks! So did Red Planet.

Audiences just don't like Mars!

The failure clearly lies with NASA's publicity department.

"Red" Martians, not "orange".

Orange Martians are the cast of Jersey Shore.

Did 'Capricorn One' do ok?

Spoiler: They didn't get to Mars.

The Martian Anti-Defamation League is greatly insulted by your comment associating fine, upstanding Martians with the cast of The Jersey Shore and expects an immediate apology.

Maybe John Carter From Mars was too close to this title?

Posted Image

EDIT: Also a flop. Get Carter (the remake) was a flop as well. So maybe people don't like Carter in their titles? No, Coach Carter (the Sam Jackson basketball pic) did well.

So I was in my local comic shop yesterday, and the 50~ year old woman who works the counter most of the time was in there was talking to one of the other customers about John Carter. Let me stress that I did not participate in this conversation in any way. But basically, she said that the main thing wrong with the movie was that it didn't have enough half-naked Dejah Thoris. That was her completely unsolicited criticism of the movie. She went on to say that it was unlikely to have happened anyways, since it was a Disney movie, but that they completely missed the point of the IP by lacking that element. Fair enough.

Really not just Dejah but every Barsoomian should be naked. Clothing is a sign of weakness, as I recall.

That's naked, not half-naked. Half-naked would actually be worse than fully clothed, because it's not only not true to the source material, it's actually insulting to the source material. The nakedness had a cultural reason in the books, semi-nakedness has none. It would be a cinematic choice designed only to tittilate, nothing more.

Burroughs' description of Dejah Thoris (from wiki, because I don't currently own any of the books, but this backs up my memory):

And the sight which met my eyes was that of a slender, girlish figure, similar in every detail to the earthly women of my past life... Her face was oval and beautiful in the extreme, her every feature was finely chiseled and exquisite, her eyes large and lustrous and her head surmounted by a mass of coal black, waving hair, caught loosely into a strange yet becoming coiffure. Her skin was of a light reddish copper color, against which the crimson glow of her cheeks and the ruby of her beautifully molded lips shone with a strangely enhancing effect. She was as destitute of clothes as the green Martians who accompanied her; indeed, save for her highly wrought ornaments she was entirely naked, nor could any apparel have enhanced the beauty of her perfect and symmetrical figure.

(My emphasis.)
