I don't get the cultural obsession with buying songs by somebody who has just died. If you like the music, why didn't you buy it when the person was alive?

I liked her songs when she was alive.
But yes, people are weird like that.

Wall to wall coverage is just the best ad for anyone's output. Beyonce turns up on the X-Factor and does a turn for 5 minutes in front of 15m viewers and her song flies out the door, whoever does well at the Brits or has a 15 min session at the end of the show for the Hall of Fame gets a boost in sales, doesn't matter if their songs had been available for 3 decades.

People aren't thinking 'oh now she's dead I'll finally by her records, I'll wait to see who dies next and get their songs'.

To give an example that I found applies to me. I've been reading comics a long time and although familiar with the name have never read a comic drawn by John Severin I'm aware of. When he recently passed away a lot of articles explained his importance and showed how great his work was and that he was still working at Dark Horse. I may pick up some of that recent work just because I've been exposed to it now.

Whitney Houston hasn't had a top 40 hit in the US for 11 years. Her death thrusts her work instantly onto prime time TV and a constant loop on the radio.

I think we all expected there to be some tribute performances of this song, but I can't say that Chris Cornell was one of the places I expected it from...

regarding the whole not buying an artist's music until after death, perhaps people just aren't familiar with the musician or many of the musician's songs. i remember reading all of one sentence that was reported when Vic Chesnutt killed himself. i'd never heard of him nor any of his songs, but i googled him, then bought some of his music. would never have otherwise.

anyways, i saw bits of whitney's funeral today. very sad indeed.
