I keep seeing the Lockout trailer and it always looks like a Saturday Night Live spoof of a trailer to a really bad action movie to me.

I think it looks like dumb fun. It doesn't take itself too seriously, and I like how sarcastic Guy Pearce is.

The trouble with embracing cliches like that is that it now has to live up to them.

Lockout looks like a copy of Escape from New York, with a talker Snake Plissken analogue...I dig it, it looks like a 1980s movie that would have starred Sly or Arnie.

You're not that far off. If Escape from LA had been a success the next sequel Carpenter wanted to do was Escape from Earth.

'Hunger Games': Gary Ross Will Not Direct Sequel 'Catching Fire'
"As a writer and a director, I simply don't have the time I need to write and prep the movie I would have wanted to make because of the fixed and tight production schedule," Ross said in a statement late Tuesday.

So.... nothing to do with a pay rise then? ;)

Not that I'm against either side if that's what it was. Ross made a hit film and Lionsgate have to control costs. Either they find a middle ground or they dont.

Ross has directed 3 movies in 14 years so he's obviously not one to be rushed.

Well don't forget, he's still a screenwriter as well as a director.

I think that's probably the main story behind it. Some like David Yeates on the Harry Potter films (4 in 5 years) or Matthew Vaughan can put out good stuff on very limited time but a sequel within 18 months is on the speedier side of scheduling. I can see perfectly why the studio would want to follow an aggressive schedule and also why that wouldn't necessarily suit a director that isn't that fast and also wants to write it.

Reminds me of the Jon Favreau vs Marvel conflict over the budget and schedule of IRON MAN 2.

It's something that happens from time to time, but I'm not convinced Ross is all that slow.

His credits only represent the projects that he worked on which got made. It's a fact of the business that a lot of projects die off during development and I'd be surprised if Ross hasn't experienced that in his career. It was still work.

While I think Ross did a mostly solid job with The Hunger Games, he certainly didn't feel irreplaceable. In fact, I did feel that once the actual Hunger Games started in the movie that Ross let the story down both as a director and writer. The scenes often lacked the intensity and emotional impact that I felt they needed. And the action was very bland. I do think he put together a very strong cast, and hopefully Lionsgate will find a suitable replacement. They shouldn't have too much problem considering Catching Fire is a guaranteed hit already.

Plenty of directors will be lining up, no doubt.

I liked Ross's understated approach, he made a drama with some action, not an action movie and I hope that whoever replaces him works in a similar way.

I do hope that whomever replaces him sticks to a similar style. I just didn't think Ross had a great handle on things once the action did ramp up. It was never bad, mind you, but I didn't feel as engaged as I did during the early dramatic parts.

I felt the same, the setup for the games was more involving than the games themselves. I would've liked to see more of the cutthroat politics going on back in Capitol, but the film is about Katniss and so that's who we had to follow the most.

The whole thing had a distance and coldness though, and that's what I want to see continue.

Looper teaser:

The more I think about this concept, the less sense it makes. And Levitts looks like a stroke victim with the prosthetics.

I can't say that the concept makes any sense at all, but Looper still looks like a movie I'll more than likely enjoy.
