Inspired by this post from Craggy:

someone should make an Equel to Cameron's Titanic. Not a sequel or a prequel, but another film that happens at the same time, and could theoretically be watched side by side with it.

I love the concept of an Equel - a side-story of what else is happening during the story you're aware of. There are a few examples of this already - to varying degrees, Rosencrantz and Guildenstern are Dead, Catwoman: Her Sister's Keeper and the Buffy episode The Zeppo would fit this description (although there's a lot more to Rosencrantz and Guildenstern are Dead than that, and we've never seen the episode of Buffy that The Zeppo happens alongside).

Which films (or TV episodes, or whatever) would you like to see Equels to?

I'd like to see an action comedy taking place at the same time as The Terminator, dealing with the next Sarah Connor in the phone book - like After Hours but with more explosions. I just have this idea of halfway through her night of chaos she goes to the police station - just as it blows up.

that's a good one.

there was talk of a Cloverfield equel, right? It'd be somewhat interesting to see that film done as a traditional blockbuster action movie, like Independence Day and all them. Of course there's also the Shaun Of The Dead doppelgang, but I think that worked fine as a gag on it's own without a whole film exploring it.

What would be really cool would be if someone would make a Transformers equel, where they focus on the titular alien robots for a change.

edit: oh, and EVERY COP MOVIE...know how the "other guys" are working another case that they end up having to sideline whilst they provide back-up to the main character(s)? I wonder what that case was, and how many explosions did they get through? (be aware, I haven't watched Marketed As A Comedy "The Other Guys" yet, but I didn't get the impression that it was a serious look at what it is like to be the number 2 cop(s) on the block in a city where there's a John McClane or...um....Riggs and Murtaugh!

As an equel to Godfather, a comedy with Fredo trying to be a really tough and awesome mafia boss but screwing everything up in hilarious ways.

An equel to Transformers The Movie (86) showing where all the season two characters, like Carly (Spike's wife and Daniel's mother), are and what they're doing that's more important than saving their homeworld from a giant planet-eating planet.

The second half of Back to the Future 2 is a great example of this as well.

I'd like to see a Star Wars equel with a group of very effective resistance fighters losing all ther funding and equipment from the Alliance, who shift their emphasis to Luke and his crew.

'Brody's Wife' - while her husband is out at sea hunting the great white that's terrorized Amity, Ellen Brody tries to keep the people of the town from despairing that their town will never recover from the shark attacks while fending off advances from the (now alcoholic) Mayor and the Police Deputy.

'Company Man' - Carter Burke's career at Weyland Yutani has stalled at the mid-level, until the rediscovery of Ellen Ripley leads him to evidence of a long forgotten plan by the company to search for something of enormous potential value on planet LV426. Navigating the cut throat world of interstellar, corporate politics our antihero becomes increasingly paranoid when contact is lost with the settlers on the planet and he talks his way onto the mission to investigate what's happened.

'The Spy Who Loved Me' - a young woman, looking after a remote motel in the Canadian Adirondack Mountains over the winter is caught in a battle of wits between a couple of murderous gangsters and a mysterious Englishman called James Bond. A battle that that also includes gunfights, car chases and explosions...

That last one is directly from the novel. Posted Image

I thought you were going to suggest Brody's wife from Homeland while he was away. She certainly did her bit to keep the morale of at least one member of the town up while he was away.

You mean because she got into a relationship with a guy when she thought her husband was dead?
What a weird thing to say.

Can't think of a lot of equels, really (Ender's Shadow is the first example that comes to mind for me, but that's only in novel form, of course), but it's a great idea. I think the potentially commercially successful one would be Boba Fett: The Hunt for Han Solo.

Ozymandious struggles to bring his plans to fruition, but he must stop the only people who could possibly stop him: his old teammates, especially the world's only superman: Dr. Manhattan. Join him as he navigates the worlds of big business and the depths of super science as he attempts to use his resources to purchase something never attempted: world peace.

John Scalzi's fourth Old Man's War novel is the third book, except from the POV of the main character's daughter.

Godot is desperately trying to get to a blasted heath where he is supposed to meet two of his friends.

(I admit I stole this idea from an old Alexi Sayle sketch.)

There already is an Equel to the only Transformers movie they ever made. It's called Scramble City, was a Japanese-only release and explained where a the Autobot combiners (and the Decepticon ones other than Devastator) were doing during the battle for Autobot City.

It's a prequel isn't it? And a Japanese originated combiner fight special doesn't sound great.

brilliant stuff guys, especially the SW and Aliens ones (although wouldn't "Company Man" be a prequel to Aliens and sequel to Alien? Or is it to take place in between the first few scenes of Aliens?)
